I bought some parts the other day and the guy had this transmission in his shed and said he would just throw it in with the deal for free.

Any guess as to what it is, and is there any way to test it without putting it in a car?

You can get a general idea of the condition by dropping the pan, careful, it may be full! What does the fluid look like and smell like?? If the pan looks clean, you can tolerate some stuff, but if it has alot of black debris and other stuff, it's shot more than likely. If it p***es that rest, you can pull the valve body, and give it an air check, I won't go into all the details, google it, but you'll be listening for the different clutches, (3) and one band how they sound! Good luck!! Been my experience, when a trans has been pulled like that, they need to be overhauled! A C-6 is fairly simple, if you can overhaul most carburetors, you can more than likely do a C-6! How's the weather? Mike.

    Thanks Mike!
I'll pull the pan and see!

The guy said it was hooked to a 351 that was in the 60 ford f100 stepside I bought. He said it was pulled so he could put in a 3 speed stick. He thought the stick would be "cooler" then lost interest in the truck.
The converter has fresh clean red oil in it and is spotless. The ****** has been sitting out of the weather so hopefully it is in good shape.

For free, take it ! Even if you don't use or need it, someone will....and you can trade / sell.

  7. To me, it looks just like my C-4.

How do you tell the difference between the C-4 and C-6?

Is it the numbers, or can you tell just by looking?

C4 has a removable bellhousing and a c6 does not also a c4 has a squire pan while a c6 pan has a curve on one side.

As will the FMX. The C4 bolts ate inside the bell, the FMX on the outside, the C6 is one piece like the one above.

The small block pattern C6 is less common than the big block ones, and is worth a little more.

  12. lookin at the new front seal and the permatex red , and if the converter fluid is newish you could probably bolt it up and run it , but like said above pull the pan and take a peek

Well nice pink fluid is a good sign, like I say I won't go into all the details to air check one, but you have to pull the valve body. (Easy)! But cleanliness is extremely important, clean hands, try to keep all that **** from getting inside. The sound is kind of like a ker-plunk, if you don't get that, just air or a weak clutch or band (you will actually see the band move), sound and air leaking, it'll need attention. At the very least I would pull the front pump, (easy), and change the seal and bushing. And put a small amount of grease on the convertor hub when you install it. That is if you decide to use it! It looks like a small case C-6, 300 six cyl., 302 and 351 W. Have fun!!

P.S., don't use any gasket sealer; silicone, nothing, just put a light film of grease on the gaskets! It takes very little crud to foul up the governor or valve body! This applies to anybodies automatic, not just Fords!

Double check the bell housing pattern. Looks wide like it might have been behind a 351m.
