Im running a white mooneyes vinyl wheel in my Merc and want to change over to a wheel a bit larger and hard plastic instead of vinyl.my car has a gm tilt column and although I would have never taken out the original wheel and column I gotta admit its nice to have and whoever did it was smart enough to use a column without an ignition on it leaving the ignition in its factory spot on the dash.
I've run a few mid 60s wheels & even a 59 chev wheel on later tilt gm columns .They all fit good but you need to modify the horn contact & turn signal cam -both are simple mods.
hey guys--you'll have to ground the copper ring at the top of the column to see if the horn operates if it does all you need is the right combination of spring/and contacts to make a good ground when you push the horn contact,it will take some trial & error but it can be done & after you get it working you'll possibly have enough small parts to do it again without any junkyard trips . The turn signal is easier-all you need is the right cancelling cam on the back of the steering wheel---on early chev wheels I've only seen 3 or 4 --if you cant get it to work & your column is from the late 70s to late 80s you may need a switch ---they cancel internally
Very doable. Some patient in making the horn work and use the correct canceling cam for the wheel. Should work. I ran a 58 Chevy wheel on an early 80's tilt col. No real problem.
ok i can only tell what i been working on cadillac 1965 dont have the same wheel non tilt .and pontiac 1965 fullzize dont have same wheel and cadillac 1968 dont have same wheel .so seems like it is a rule it dont fit.non tilt and standard is not the same.
I have had to turn down the bottom of the wheel where it meets the column because it would push down on the lock plate.I also had to drill a new hole in the steering wheel for the horn contact post to stick out of.
