    Hey all,

Putting my Dodge together, I have heard a lot of stories from folks about ***ling in Upstate NY. I have heard people say that any car below the 1973 doesn't need a ***le, just go down and register.

I intend on going the old car ***le route for cheap QQ insurance etc. I can only imagine the hoops they make you jump though for a self built ***le inspection.

So, does anyone have actual experience with dealing with NY Motor Vehicle? My body has no numbers, not on the door innards or on the cowl or the firewall. The frame is 2x4 box steel with no numbers; so, I am at a loss with basically no numbers but my block.

What is a man to do in that pickle?

Anyway, any ideas. I realize that if I find a ***le, then I am in great shape; but what teh hell is the off chance of someone coming up with something even close enough to work for me that wouldn't cost more than my entore car?

I have also heard about the companies that tiltle cars for a fee. Anyone have any luck or info on that route?

All and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Pork

The HAMB really doesn't do ***le talk. In fact, a recent thread got closed. Why not call the DMV and get info from the horses mouth?

What year vehicle does it most closely resemble? I believe 72 was the first year for NY ***les. Prior to that ownership was by way of the registration was by way of the registration do***ents. But in either case a number of some sort was required. Some counties used engine numbers some used serial numbers. You can go to the NY DMV site and read and download applicable do***ents. If its a non ***le year you may be able to register based on engine number but it will need to be reflective of the year of the engine, and need to meet the regulations ***ociated with that year as far as emissions, safety and other vehicle law requirements. Take a look at the vehicle safety inspection page for when seat belts, impact bumpers, and emmissioin control devices came under statute. Just google NY DMV and check out the forms sections.

  5. Here are 3 numbers for you to call..........

    Albany District Office - 518-473-5404

    Region 4 Vehicle Safety - Syracuse - 315-458-6683

    Region 5 Vehicle Safety - Buffalo - 716-826-3187

Don't deal with local DMV, they won't know.

How do I know, I'm a registered NYS Dealer.

Yeah, I figured ***le talk would be sticky. Trust me, I am not asking anyone anything crooked here. I am just asking for personal NY experiences when it comes to registering NY cars that are so old a ***le isn't needed anymore.

I intend to run QQ plates on the thing anyway. I do have a bill of sale from the guy I purchased the body from; but of course, the small block and trans are going to be an issue for an original 30 Dodge.

This seems like something that should be done BEFORE you build a car.

Funny thing about that. If you are starting out with a bunch of parts. You don't have a ***le because you don't have a car. It would be nice if the state governments could understand that.

In MA. it would have to be inspected by the state police and you would need a bill of sale for all the parts purchaced and the VIN of the vechicle that it was off of to prove that there are no stolen parts. You will end up with a ***le for a 2013 something (possably the manf. name of the motor), as long as it meets all of the 2013 safety standards and the immitions standard for the year of the motor.

There are a few other details that you will become aware of when they inspect the car.

Ps, you will pay the sales tax on a 2013 auto.

  16. Seeing that this question comes up almost on a weekly basis, it would make life easier.

    Ya think!

I would search for a ***le to something similar. Or even maybe a set of tags off a car. I just ***led mine the other day without a ***le but it did have numbers on the car. They gave me no trouble at all and it cost me $29. Plus, Good luck getting a cheap insurance rate on a "home built" car.

Great , great news. I was down flippin the steering shafts around, and upside down and backward with my drop light, what do I spy, right at the left corner post/ piller, up high under the cowl? A stamped number! Holy Polooka! Now this is f'n cool as hell!

Every so often ys don't get peed on! Man! So, now I guess I take that number and my bill of sale and head of to the NYMV? Someone said that you should scribe a pencil over the number as proof? Can't I just bring the number?

You guys heard of this before (scribing the number)? This doesn't look like it will scribe too well. It is only like an inch and a half lon g and an inch high. I am stoked now as there is no hokey pockey now!

"This seems like something that should be done BEFORE you build a car."

I understand the statement, but the built is not going to stop as a result of no paperwork. Worst case, I just will have to jump every hoop that the state mandates; but she will be registered. Oh and someone mentioned that QQ is a Jersey thing. Well, makes sense, since I grew up in NJ and have only been in NY for 4 years now.

  20. I've done the pencil thing before. You lay a piece of paper over the number, use the side of the lead of the pencil and basically "charcoal" the paper where the numbers are. You don't need a lot of pressure just enough for the numbers to show. It's easy!

Hey PChop if you're still lookin' for a pickup get a hold of me.

Just take a pic of the number and they will accept it. Make sure it is clear and easy to read, they were a little tough on that part. Gotta fill out four forms total and have the normal info- receipt, insurance on the car, license, etc.

  22. Nope, not anymore!

Pencil scratch or get a NYS Trooper over to verify (yeah right, good luck with that happening).

If there is a vin tag on the car all you need. To do is take a tracing of it and that's good for DMV you don't need a bill of sale there is a. Aftadavit of sale form that you fill out. Vehicles older than 73 will just get a transferable registration even if you have a ***le from another state. If your car dosent have a vin tag then it will be registered as a special construction

Yup do the etching and do the affidavit. Basically you are swearing that to the best of your knowledge no one else has a claim on the vehicle. If you go home built you can get a DMV issued ID number for it but it would have to be registered and meet all the **** for a 2013 vehicle. If you have receipts for the parts or steel you bought, take them but with the etching and the affidavit, you should not need anything else. They might make you take it for a stolen vehicle task force inspection which you have to pay 250 bucks for, and prove your pieces and parts weren't stolen.

Thanx ALL. I will take teh scribe down to DMV. Can I do it even if its not ready to go? I would like to have all of this done before it is finished. I mean, will they care that th ecar is all apart- doe sit need to be together? Also, I was just thinking, this number I found, is not on a placard of any kind, it is stamped in teh post. For all I know it might just be a cowl stamping number. I guess worst thing is they say invalid number and I am sent home. I will keep you informed.

You can insure it register it and then turn in the plates at the same time and then cancell the insurance my insurance company usally ends up charging me nothing since it it only insured for less than a day. Then you have the car registered in your name and when you are ready just renew the reg and get insurance

I could not get a good Stencil or Pic because of reflection on Stainless Tag.
Cute DMV lady said to get Law Enforcement to verify on their letterhead.
So i called NYSP, Trooper took all info over the Phone, stopped by later to verify, and came through on Dept letterhead. Its all about how you speak to people.
