ya know ant, the funny thing is, as long as i've known manny and anthony, and as many times as i've been to that house, I've never seen that car in person.

That car is as real as it gets though. A car with a real, tangible kustom pedigree. I'd imagine that 99.9% of the people on this board wouldn't have the scratch to pick that up.

You know Manny. THe car is ready for show. Hed rather drive the shit outta the 98 and not worry about it.

  10. I was diggin' the custom work until I saw the seats. Baby Blue? WTF? Does it come with matching fuzzy dice? I'll never understand some people. Don't mind me, just typing out loud here.

If the only thing on this car that leaves an impression on you is the "baby blue" stitched on the seats, then you sir are a fucking retard.

Look at the work, look at the pedigree dating back to the hey day of kustom cars, built by one of the great builders in the north east. You can't clone history, either you have it or you don't, and this has it.

Would you feel better if maltese crosses were stitched in the seats?

    wtf?

dude, no offense, but the car is the real deal, it is a friggin rolling history report of what we're all doing today...it is a full on show kustom, with no side windows, originally intended for indoor show use only...Manny Bastio drove the shit outta this thing over the last 20 years...the best you could come up with is the embroidery on the seats, c'mon....maybe you'd appreciate it more with an iron cross or skull & cross bones there instead....just thinking outloud...........

once again my reasoning for only caring about what maybe 10% of the people on this board say. you sir are an idiot and should stick to driving your honda cuz after a comment like that we can all see that you dont know a thing about custom cars

Any one who ever touched the car fuckin rules. A list of Jersey rulers including Manny himself. I could write a book on it.

  19. You guys are so fricking touchy. I realize that a ton of great work went into that car and it has oodles of history. And I'm sure the guy that owns it is swell and the guys that owned it are rulers and blah, blah, blah! I do not do iron crosses or drive a honda. I am no retard pal. I will state this as a matter of my humble opinion. The name plate on the rear, the frenched antenna and the seats with Baby Blue are just plain corny to me. LESS IS MORE! All I am saying is that great customs of the past used their quality modifications speak for themselves. They didn't need unnecessary embellishments to define a car. I think they used to call them "gook wagons" if my memory serves me correct. I hope some happy streetrodder buys it and takes it to all the Goodguys shows and wins lots of trophies. Why don't one of you guys buy it? It is an awesome car. Someone will enjoy it.

they didnt need unnecessary embellishments??yeah,ok,the full out customs with the record players and telephones didnt have anything in them that wasnt needed,right?geez..name plate..ok..i got an issue of July 57 for Customs Illustrated and gee, what do i see? a custom with a license plate that spells out the owner's name.frenched antenna being corny???that's practically a mild custom STAPLE..it's not like it's got triple capped non-functional lakes pipes with cry-baby-dolls on it.what else is in that 57 issue?a car with the owner's name IN A LIGHT UP HOOD ORNAMENT..i think that's a little more corny,if you ask me,but it's dead on 50s.and as for winning trophies, yeah, guys back then won trophies,too..bob hirohata won somethin like 148 in the whole 3 years he had his car before he sold it (52-55)so quit your crying, this guy could have got a PT Cruiser with the red steelies and baby moons and try to sell it.the taillights alone on that car are an ode to the Hirohata merc!!quit nit-picking about changeable things on a car like this.that's like being alone with a super model and crying about the shoes she's wearing!! who cares!!!!!!!!and to everyone else who UNDERSTANDS how AWESOME this car is,i'm sorry for the rant.
    creepy

oldbeet, considering the car was built in 57, and has been driven countless miles over the years, i'm sure the builders had the sense to somehow re-inforce the door latch pillar...it has never been an issue....

Yes, the car has reinforced door posts, but they are still a 'bit' on the flimsy side. Not bad for driving, but jacking it up is another story, not much worse than any ragtop.
Yeah, the car is true nostalgia. Yeah, car names, and frenched antennas are what was really going on. The guy worked for (who started, and was big in the 50's) put a tunnelled antenna on every custom he built. I still put them on almost all of mine. I don't know where you guys get your "history" from, West Coast Choppers? The car is truly 'East Coast', though, so it has it's signature on it's build.
I am fortunate to have been working for Manny when he bought it, hell, even before that, when he re-discovered it. I had a hand on the early build, actually customizing the front end. It had not been touched at Cove's, so it was stock appearing, and hanging much too low for the sectioned body. I was there when BJ Miller did the rest of the work.
Cove customs never got the recognition they deserved, but neither did any NJ, NY cars. There have been quite a few really great ones!

I was waiting for chopolds to respond. Good reply Mark.

It's sad that some people want to judge what a custom should be by some narrow preconceived notions. I wish I could afford to bid on this car. It's pure true 50's style custom. Just not the right region for some people. Me, I like them all.

I've got a few shots of my Olds in Manny's shop next to the Merc. I was preping the Olds for it's first paint job, 1986 to be exact.
Yeah, Anthony was just a Cheez-ball stealin', runny nosed brat at the time! Hahaha. Memories!
Manny also had a pretty cool 56 Merc full custom. Donn Lowe bodywork, Manny's full frame swap, paint by Pazsik, ghost scallops by your truly. Manny hated the scallops, cause I did them in ghost pearls. He also built, and I painted, the pink and white 56 Merc that goes to Lead East, and we did the first rendition of Les Miller's 52 Packard mild custom there. We built Manny a 63 Impala, I did body and paint, Black Cherry, but when Manny tried to take the car down south for upholstery work, he crashed the truck, trailer and the 63. The 63 had the least amount of damage, so he drove that home. I think it later sold to Glen and Elaine (Lady's Ford, and 38 Pontiac coupe).

That is a historic car, and really really cool, but I also dig more doors.. The interior is perfect and it would be a sin to do anything to it, because of the history of the car. What's funny I was looking thru a rod and custom from a couple of months ago and they had a 2 part article on 60's show interiors. This car fits the bill EXACTLY, and not over the top at all. You want corny check out the apolstered steering wheel or under the dash 13" tv with antenna sticking out the top of the dash!
