Cut the springs, drop spindles or bags???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kellys Hot Rod Parts, Mar 7, 2013.

  1. I bought this 47 Ford Kustom last fall have started working on it for spring but want to lower the car..It sits on a 1969 chevelle coil spring ch***is. I dont know if I should 1:: cut the springs ( how much do I cut to lower it 1 1/2- 2") 2:: put 2" drop spindles in the front and cut the rear or 3:: use air bags..(I dont really like the ride of bags) At this point I am undecided, what do you think has the best ride??

Shorter coil springs or dropped spindles will give you the best ride. If you cut the coils, take them out and cut off one full coil with a chop saw. That will give you about a 2" drop.

Maybe its the angle of that lower pic, but it appears the front tires are nearly flush with outter wheel opening.
Likely from being on a newer ch***is.

Id be concerned that if you lower the car too much, you may restrict your turning radius alot.

I feel airride(bags), if done right, has a fantastic ride quaility. And if your front wheels are indeed out close to edge, bags may be best option.

Also possible to use a off-set FWD style front wheel and run hubcaps. That may pull wheels in some, and then lowered coils.

Would like better, bigger pics to see if Im seeing things, or just a illusion.

  4. Usually one coil is good for 1.5-2", if you have cash I would go with drop spidles.

I don't know what the lower A frame looks like, but can you lower the spring pocket? Then you could keep the stock spring and still get the car lower.

  6. I think I may be able to change the offset on the wheels otherwise, since I am doing the body over anyway I may just raise the wheel openings it would also give it more of a channeled look....

i have never had problems with my bags on any of my vehicles, much prefer them to the idea of cutting, to the right way of dropped spindles or bags

I'd think about rolling your fenders instead of "raising" them. Maybe that's just me?

Definitely don't cut the springs though, it's a shortcut and your car will ride like ****.

A narrowed & stepped lower control arm may give you the room. And the drop (2") will be a natural. With this the stock, full length shock will remain.

Based off how thick the trim rings are, it seems like you have a fairly wide wheel up front.
That helps. By changing to a slightly narrower wheel, or change offset to more back-space, it should pull wheels in.
Then buy drop spindles for that ch***is, and maybe a half loop cut on springs should give ya a nice 3"-3.5" drop and still ride good.
