I have searched on here to no avail. Whats the best way to put power steering on an ad truck with a dropped stock axle? Any advice would be appreciated.
if you want to buy a kit check out these links http://www.classicparts.com/1947-59-Power-Steering-Conversion-Kit/productinfo/76-977/ http://www.scribd.com/full/75817434?access_key=key-1ck1h3ekaw0jyon6pa1h Page 95 in the truck shop book
Still running the inline. Looking for something cheap that can be made to work. Something like the vega box on other cars.
Some guys are putting a later style 4x4 box out in front of the axle and running it that way. These guys sell both a kit for the steering arm and drag link and a kit with pump and box. I'm not seeing how the box mounts to the frame unless that third piece in the steering arm/drag link photo is part of the setup to mount the pump. I thought I saw photos the other day of one installed but can't find them at the moment.
I have a 4" dropped front axle and power steering. I used this set up http://www.classicparts.com/1947-59-...ctinfo/76-977/ with a 2 wheel drive box from a 76 chevy truck. I had to raise my box 4 inches to get rid of the ugly bump steer I had.
Toyota box from the 80s 4x4 trucks is one of the best swaps, the chevy boxes are huge and are so close bump steer is horrible. the toyota box is a near bolt in with a nice similair flamge for frame mount and everything
Any Toyota 4X4 steering box. The Toyota truck must be a straight axle type. The box will work with a GM power steering pump. You will have to modify stock steering column to adapt to the Toyota box. All and all its a pretty simple install.
Toyota: With a dropped axle, you'd have to make a lower column mount, at the firewall, and put the u-joint as close to the firewall, add a short length of column shaft, and a second u-joint at the box. This would enable you to mount the box higher up, by whatever the drop in the axle is. You might even need to clock (rotate) the box a little for the column u-joints to turn smoothly. This is easy, just make the mount that way. Remember to keep the pitman arm pointing down at center.
I know this is older but was wanting to do this to my 53 truck and go as cheap as possible and does anyone have anymore pics or info on the toyota 4x4 set up and my truck still has the straight 6 with the 3 on the tree would all this still work im kinda a newbie to all this stuff
