I bought what I was told is a Corvair steering box....... Alll the ones I've seen are alluminum and are reversable. The alluminum ones have mounting tabs so they will sit on top of a frame......Right?

This one is steel and has mounting tabs on the top, as if it would bolt to the bottom of the frame. Is this a corvair box? Is it reversable?

Dude said he pulled it out of a corvair so I'm guessing it is an early one?

Anyway I've had this thing all apart and back together and I just don't see how it could be reversed..

What is the process on the alluminum ones? I figured it couldn't be a big deal as it is so common....

I think I'm just going to go with a ford box..... I hate Corvairs anyway...

    Thanks...

Found this excerpt from another forum...

"Clamp the box in a vise. Loosen the sector shaft adjusting screw slightly (That's the screw with the locking nut on the side of the box opposite the pittman arm). Unscrew the cap off the big end off the box (I always used a large pair of channel-locks, a pipe wrench will work, too). Carefully screw the worm shaft out through the open end. Hopefully there is enough grease in the box to hold all the recirculating balls in place. Now flip the worm shaft end-for-end and screw it back in place. Everything should look pretty much the same as before except the input end of the worm shaft is sticking out the big end. Next you will need to drill the cap so that the shaft can p*** through it and it will need a grease seal. If you can get the original seal out of the other end without damaging it, you might be able to reuse it. Otherwise, you will need a new one. If your local parts house isn't helpful, try a lawnmower shop. The end that has the original hole will need to be plugged with a small freeze-plug so the box will retain its grease. After you screw the cap back on and tighten it, adjust the sector shaft adjusting screw to remove excess play from the box, tighten the lock nut and you're done. The box will now work backwards from before, so you can mount it with the pittman arm hanging down instead of pointing up. "

    Good Luck...

It is a Corvair box, much stronger than the aluminum ones. Why do you want to reverse it? If you mount it under the frame, it will work fine. There is a large spline in the pitman splines. Remove it with a file and you can place it at any angle. Works great.

Shouldn't need to pull the worm shaft out of the nut and risk losing all the balls. On the GM box (Aussie) I reversed, I took the nut and the worm out together and put them back in *** about. Other than that, same process as above. Couldn't believe how easy it was.

Cool, So the shaft ends up sticking out the other side.... huh.

I thought you needed to flip something inside the box...
I had it apart and back together like five times..... I kept reversing the the thing that holds all the balls....
Dude I played with balls all day yesterday... haha

Anyway I kept thing if I reversed that it would be reversed... but it always worked the same.. Now it all makes scense.. I repacked all those balls and it works super nice now so I guess it was worth it..

I still might try to run it with the pitman arm running up.... The car is superlow so it might work out. I was just trying to figure out what was up with the reversing deal.....

    Thanks, Bob

    Bob,

You also might want to pm Ichoptop, he just did two of them, one steel and one aluminum.

I took that steering box out myself, it was from a 1966 Corvair Monza 110 2 door hardtop. 100% money back guarantee if I'm wrong.

    '61-3 = aluminum, '65-9 = iron. Not completely sure about '64.

S-Blow it is totally a corvair box.... I was confused because I have only seen reversed ones... It looked funny..

Anyway, now thaty I've had it apart abunch of times and realised that the box itself gets reversed, not a worm gear or something.... its all good..

Thankjs alot for the articles and help.... It does seem pretty easy and should work out great... And thanks for the sweet deal squablow..

This steering box is going in the T-RANTULA..............
