I am finishing up my garage with a barn I tore down. The wainscoat is rust tin from the roof. Since the white garage doors stood out, I painted the hardware with satin engine enamel, and wood grained the panels with 3 colors of latex paint to look like weathered barn wood. The brick wall, is made from barn wood.

Wood walls are going to be hard to keep clean and if you use wood paint it a gloss or semi gloss finish.

I used sheet rock in my shop and haven't regretted the choice. HRP

I did the back wall of my garage in thin cedar planks over the chipboard, kind of a cool look

I used chip board/OSB (old***** board lol) for my walls. Its cheap, goes up fast and you can screw or nail into it anywhere to hang stuff. Which is handy for light stuff.

whenever I get to it I plan on using OSB painted white, brighter the better to reflect light and keep the place lit up.

My pal Dave has his shop split and used white metal on the walls in the metal working and painting side.

And in his upholstery and****embly side he used bead board and painted floors. HRP

It will be open to ALL types of activity, dont mind the cleanup. Ceiling will be bright white painted prorib panels. IF it were a full time body shop, then no the wood is not practical.

I got a whole bunch of used scenery flats from the local college theater given to me, so my walls are castles and woods and other weird stuff.

Sheetrock. Paint gloss white. Or sign board painted gloss white, if your afraid of busting through the sheetrock.

I done the walls in white metal sheeting, but then I hung all kinds of signs and other stuff all over. So it is still a pain in the**** to clean. But it looks cool....

I used osb painted with kilx much more durable than drywall and you can put a srew or small nail were ever you want. I painted all mine on the floor before I put it up .

Damn good job! How long did it take to do the brick wall from barn wood. Man you've got some patience! Dont listen to the nay-sayers on keeping it clean, aged barn wood looks, well....aged:rolleyes:
Just add unique car parts, old signs, and a neon or two, your ride, and you'll beg to get thrown outta the house!

If you use OSB wood be ready for a lot of cobwebs and dirt that will stick to the rough surface and it's not easy to clean even when painted. My shop has OSB painted gloss white and it's a pain to keep clean!!

I used OSB (chip board) and painted it light gray, strong, hang anything anywhere and not a lot more than sheetrock. Been there for 24 years with no problems.

  20. we redid the walls in our shop ... with prefinished light grey slat wall from a sewing machine store show room ... we bought it still screwed on the wall at the "going out of business" auction for 100 dollars for all of it
we removed and hauled the approx 50 4x8 sheets, some had outlet cut outs and goofy shapes .. we were able to cover all walls in our 24x 60 shop we have some leftover ...

the hanging hooks and fixtures, ****t. shelves were cheap after the walls were sold..

it looks nice and all is changeable , hanging/storing things until used ,bought, sold

I do not have a pic of the inside..sorry

ImageUploadedByTJJ1362845237.867637.jpg ImageUploadedByTJJ1362845255.994080.jpg As you can see I have used old barn wood on parts of my walls. The barn wood doesn't seem to make it darker than if there were white walls. Good lighting helps. Be sure that if you use wood it won't be whee you will be grinding or welding . One spark can smolder for a while before the fire breaks out. I'm not finished but some of my work areas will be covered in white tin just for that reason.

Bright white sheetrock, osb or sheet metal if you are planning on doing serious work in it. The artsy stuff is cool if it is only a garage that you keep your cars in and working on them is more on the detailing/maintenance side of things. I've worked in shops that were real caves before including the first automotive shop I ever worked in and It just slows things down when you don't have a well lit shop that you can really see what you are doing to work in.

One of my buddies has stainless sheets up 4 ft on his shop walls to catch anything flying around from grinding, cutting or welding and that makes it pretty nice but he got a real deal on that as he works with stainless all the time.

Mine are covered with tons of cabinets full of parts, tools, magazines, paint, lube, and tons of other*****. I see some garages with wheels hanging on a wall as decorations. I would kill for a empty wall just to put stuff on, like my sheet metal brake, and my press brake that are sitting in the middle of my floor. Man, I can't wait to get my 40x40 built, so I can have a clean garage to park my somewhat finished cars in.

To the o.p., the best thing is osb then cover with Sheetrock and nice bright white gloss paint. That way you put a screw anywhere and catch wood. My last house had just plain osb and it looked like*****, but it was nice to be able to hang anything anywhere.

I did sheetrock 4' up from the floor all the way around, then finished the top 4' with pre-painted (white) heavy duty pegboard...one can NEVER have enough storage and all that pegboard has endless possibilities...no regrets
