My 62 falcon w/ 144 has the same problem. Mainly vapors coming up through the oil breather cap. I don't have that much coming through the blowby dump tube that goes towards the ground. I was thinking of making a pcv system for it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Do a search for pcv, there were some great entries on how to make a system, and exactly what a pcv is.
    Good Luck,

You probably don't have a problem at all. All cars with a road draft breather system will have vapors coming out the breather when it's parked and idleing. The system only works when the car is in motion. When the car is moving the vapors will be pulled out of the road draft tube under the engine and fresh air will go into the breather on top.

You wont see the vapors anymore if you install a PCV system correctly but the normal blowby will still be happening. Our late model PCV equipped cars still have the same blowby we just can't see it.

If you aren't using excessive oil don't worry about it. The vapors are normal.

If it's not eating oil and a compression check comes out ok, your rings are probably fine. Just squint when those people are p***ing you on the hills, and their fingers will all look like thumbs-up.

While this is true, there are a couple of things you'd wanna check:

    1) Get the car up to operating temp; run it down the road a ways (ten miles or so) and check the plugs. If they're tan - then yer okay.

    2) Old motors have a tendency to gunk up their oil returns - if so, then oil gets trapped topside and runs down the valve guides. This is especially true if you've been runnin' it on the hiway and you see smoke out the back - but not outta the tailpipe. some motor flush and a coathanger down the oil returns can solve this pretty quick.

    3) the Ford sixes were famous for cracking their valve guide seals. When this happens, you'll get oil into the motor from the topside. It's an easy fix - you don't even have to pull the head.

    4) If the motor was a sitter, then the rings may be gunked up in their lands. Drive it a bit to see if she don't free up - they usually do.

The old cheap-*** way of gettin' rid of the smoke was to dump some ATF in the gas; ATF has a LOT of detergents which can bust loose ring varnish. There are better choices on the shelf of yer local auto parts store these days - look for a product that claims to bust up combustion chamber and valve deposits.

Hope this helps - keep us posted!
