i 'm stickin' a 39 banjo rear in my a,so how should i mount the rear spring? should i move my crossmember further back,or alter the 39 rear to run the spring on top using shackle mounts welded to the axle housings?

it all depends on how you want the car to sit and how much trunk space you want to have and also if you DONT want to cut the frame

id say if your planning to Z the frame and make it low your best bet would be to just lengthen it and run the spring behind

just remember to make your extensions paralell otherwise they will get out to the edges of the body as they go back

some of these parts suppliers do sell the pieces to weld to the top of your rear if you did indeed want to run the spring ontop though

    good luck

My dad's A has the stock A spring, minus a few leafs, with some new brackets welded on top of the banjo. Makes a clean, bolt in installation, but his car has a stock A frame other than the deuce K member.

Nate, I'm running the stock A rear spring on Speedway shackles with my '46 rear using the original "46 mounts. I stepped and lengthened the frame with 2X4 tubing. I did keep the stock frame angle and it still has plenty of clearance for the body (tudor sedan, coupe may be narrower at the back). On mine it needed to have the rear crossmember set back about seven inches. I posted pic a couple weeks ago of the frame mods. Search for "Model A gets its A** Kicked".

Move the crossmember back. Easier to get the car lower than spring above axle.
