I just can't get the NUT loose on a 1954 Cadillac Power Steering Pump I must doing somthing wrong, or missing something obvious The PS pump is still on the engine ... I want to change over to a double pulley to add AC ... It appears to be a fairly standard looking nut holding the PS pulley on the theaded/keyed shaft of the pump ... I've been using WD40 for a couple of days ... I've been tapping on the end of a 3/4" 6 point wrench ... until I have rotated the engine around a couple of times and just starting to round the nut a bit ... I believe it to be the origional, a fairly standard GM style pump used in 1952-1956 ... I realise that I may very well require a pulley puller after I get the nut off the threaded shaft ... Attached are a couple of pictures of the same 1954 pump on ebay ... for about $300 + core charge ... I don't want to go that route ... its still working fine ... but I will probably buy a rebuild kit in case I need it in the future ... Am I missing something here ? I'm thinking I may have to cut the NUT off and use a puller on the pulley ??
Don't know about any threads? The one in the photo doesn't show any threads ? There is a tool for the pressed on (key'd) ones. Slips into the rings on the hub snout, pulley, bolt cranks down in center & pulls it off.
The photos clearly show a pump with a nut on the end of the shaft......and in the second photo you can see the woodruff key on the pump shaft......it is not a pressed on style as used on later models. Ray
Yes Ray ... that pretty much sums it up ... a keyed shaft with a threaded nut on it ... Just frozen on after 60 years of use ... I've only see a couple of threads exposed, but it does look like a regular right hand thread ... As its still on the car, I only have room for a wrench, not quite enough for regular socket and ratchet wrench ... I was hoping someone has had a similar situation they had to deal with on a mid 50's GM power steering pump ... Unless I'm missing something obvious ... I'm considering cutting/splitting the nut ... changing the pulley ... then buying a new nut ... Just not sure that I'm not missing something ... My car manual just states "remove the nut" when doing rebuilding or replacing the PS pump ...
Don't cut the nut! ,,might be like cutting one of your own off.. I would be patient until someone familiar with the situation offers a solution..Impact gun sounds right to me but there could be something we are missing..Try a cadillac forum? Call the dealer??
I guess I don't understand your (apparent) reluctance to remove the pump from it's bracket, or removing/moving whatever is in front of the pump, in order to gain access with an impact wrench. It seems to me you should be able to unbolt the pump mounting bracket, or the pump from the mounting bracket, and likely without detaching the hoses from the pump, and move it around to where you have enough room to use the impact on it. Is the problem you don't have access to an impact wrench? Ray
IF you dont want to take the pump off to remove the nut, you surely wont want to remove the pump to take the pulley off.....but you will have to.
I finally decided to just 'cut off the nut' ... I picked up a couple of nut splitters at Princess Auto ($18) It worked very well, with just a 1/2" socket on the ratchet ... no strain on the pump / shaft and just lifted the pulley off the pump by hand after the nut was cut off ... I was afraid (my apparent reluctance) to continue hammering on the nut, or using an impact wrench, on a working 60 year old PS pump already installed on the car ... since I didn't plan to remove and rebuild it right now ... I'll be sure to order new hoses and a rebuild kit, for when I need it in the future ... Luckily ... I didn't have to take the pump off to remove the nut or remove the pulley ... Its certainly not the only way to do this, as most of you mentioned using an impact wrench to remove the nut, but splitting the nut worked very easily for me in this case ...
