SBF Engine ID Help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Beep, Mar 12, 2013.

  1. Hey all you SBF guys out there. I need some help IDing my engine. I think it is a 1971 351w out of a '71 Galaxie 500, but am confused. Casting numbers are:

    Block = D1AE-6015-DA11
    Intake = D1AE-9425-CA

    I have been told that since the harmonic balancer has a 4 hole bolt pattern, it is a truck engine of 1985 or later.

    Can you help me out here.

    Thanks

    Block and intake are D1=71.
    Have to wait for the next reply on the 4 bolt balancer.

    Keep in mind that any 351w balancer can be used in the 71 engine.

    Here is what I found on 4 bolt balancers from another site.

    The change was made in 1969, not in 1970.

    The outer pulley bolts to the harmonic balancer (6316).

    1968 302: C8AZ6316A

    1969/79 302 (except 1975/78 Mustang II): D8TZ6316B (replaced C9TZ6316A).

    The 302 was introduced Spring 1968, the 289 was canceled at the end of the 1968 model run.

    4 bolt outer pulleys are easier to find, but from 1969 thru 1979, there's about 50 different ones! I kid you not.

    1, 2, 3 and 4 sheave (groove) outer pulley's were offered. Depending on the application, the offset will not be the same. So you just can't buy one and then expect that the belts will line up.

    It is a 71 351W with lowered compression. Ford did this by raising the deck height to reduce Nox emmissions.

    D1 = 1971
    A = Ford
    E = Engine group
    6015 = Basic part number
    D = third revision

    Ta' find the engine assembly date, look at the boss on the driver's side of the block directly above/behind the timing cover, kind'a under the distrubitor.

    There will be a series of letters and numbers stamped there- this is the date the engine was actually assembled...

    Edited ta' add:
    Some 351W assembly dates are on the passenger side 'a the block on a boss under the front/outside headbolt....

  8. OK, I pretty certain now that mine is in fact a 1971 351w. The engine came with the original harmonic balancer and flexplate so I assume the balance is ok also. Can anyone tell me if it is a 50 or 28 ounce set up if it is a 1971?

    28oz.

    Just because it's got a D1AE, etc casting/engineering number doesn't necessarily make it a 71- it's at least a 1971.

    Try to find the assembly date.....

    It is a 28oz set up unless it has been balanced otherwise. I have a neutral balanced Windsor stroker.

    All the 351W's are the 28oz balance, it's only the 302's went to 50oz in 1981-82
