Follow-up to my Closed-Down No-Oil Thread

This is not intended to rekindle any of the b.s. from that thread, but to let interested folks know what happened to my oil-starved engine. Please don't start any ruckus here.

My pro (40 yrs experience on all kinds of machines) mechanic buddy was here today, and as planned we refilled with oil and primed it without starting till we saw full oil pressure. Checked oil for ca-ca and finding none had a look at a bearing & the underside of the engine.

Nothing there that alarmed him so we started it up.

It sounded normal immediately. When warmed up oil pressure was at 65 when revved a bit, 22 at idle. No weird/disturbing noises.

He said I was lucky and the combination of the oil in the long remote lines, the filter, and whatever was in the p***ages in the block must have been enough to keep it from major damage.

He said if it was his car he'd just go ahead and drive it, which is what I will do. Yep, I have that much faith in his opinion.

It sure took long enough to come to a conclusion ,Damm I 62 years old ,was beginng to wonder if I could hang on long enough for the final results, but glad all is good

First of all, I bet most of us have done something exactly like you did in forgetting to put oil in it. Humans make mistakes.

Secondly, you should be ok. Motors are pretty forgiving , especially American V8 motors. One time I was driving my 27 and started hearing a loud ticking. I thought I blew out a header gasket, but when I looked at the oil pressure gauge it was on zero. I drove it another block to my GF house, figuring I couldn't hurt it any worse. When I pulled the distributor I found the drive shaft for the oil pump had snapped in half.

I replaced the driveshaft, fired it up, and had 70 pounds of pressure again. I drove the car with that motor for a few more years and never had any problems from that little mishap. I think you will be fine too.

The way you worded that - you pulled the pan and looked at a crank or piston bearing after you primed it?

Anyways - I had some telling me the Cad 472 in my COE was toast - but she's runs fine after a little work.

I kind of done something similar,just got done installing the new timing chain set in a 59 Olds 371 so after draining the oil and refilling it I forgot to install the oil filter. Ran the motor a few minutes waiting for pressure to show on the gauge so I shut it off and found oil everywhere,cleaned up the mess and installed the filter and refilled with oil and I think the motor is still going.

Good deal! I'd probably change the oil and filter again pretty soon just for good measure, and cut the filter open.

And don't forget the oil.
