392 Hemi, oil galley plug, need help.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by no6, Mar 13, 2013.

  1. I have a 57 392, after getting it together and in the 34 I had a plug left over from the machine shop that bothered me. I took the motor back out after searching and discovering that there is a second plug behind the drivers side plug at the back of the block. When I removed the first plug sure enough you can see the oil galley. The problem is I see no threads for a threaded plug but there is a shoulder. Does it take a soft plug and what size? You Hemi gurus could help us novice guys with a good description of back there. When I did a search I could find little info. Thanks in advance guys.

If you're talking about the one behind the dizzy(tword the front of the engine side), there are/were threads. People often drill .050 holes in the plug to oil the cam/dizzy gears before screwing it in.

It takes a 3/8 NPT plug.

You young guys gotta know us old guys eyes ain't what they used to be, I could not see the threads, no way, no how, but after you told me I checked with a pick and could feel them, the plug is in and anyone that searches this item will know about the plug, thanks a bunch.

The 331 is the same. That plug has to be in there; otherwise, no oil pressure

As it turned out, the 331 short block that I bought did not have this plug in place.
The plug at the rear of the block was installed tho', so a guy would never have noticed it.

If it weren't for reading about this on the HAMB, I would have never known, and been in big trouble.

1st pic; looking through the rear hole in the block and into the oil gallery.

2nd pic, looking down into the dist well. Small mirror showing 3/8" NPT plug in place. Use some pipe thread sealant/compound on it.
