Customs A mad man's fruits of experimenting -

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Mar 13, 2013.

  1. Sometimes I catch a lot of flack for experimenting and trying new stuff, most of the time it's applying proven methods in a different way or to a different subject matter. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this "What the hell are you doing - NOW ?!?!" I'd be filthy rich.

Sometimes it's sprouted in having just enough info to be dangerous and faking the rest with ambition . " It's amazing what you can do if you don't know that you can't do it" (saw that quote on the Hamb someplace)

I must say I just love this Place, the HAMB !!

    Here's my latest fruit
    I call it "Poison Apple".
    Here's why :
Its black but flops candy apple red in the light.
It looks so good I want to lick it.
I really can't stop looking at it- mesmerized
It's consumed a lot of effort and resources to get her

ive been watching this and reading about what you've been doing, I give you a thumbs up because I did about the same thing a year ago and was planning on painting my coupe like that, (not that color) but in the same sort of method

I say thumbs up to you. its fun being the one in the end to successfully do something everyone says you cant hahahah

It looks like all of your hard work has paid off. It looks beautiful on my screen yet I'm sure that it looks amazing in person.

    All the best,

So have you found a reasonable paint source then? Looks killer too

  6. Thanks guys !

That's just an odd fender laying around here.
    73-87 Chevy truck

It's been equally fun and frustrating trying to get what I wanted.
Now I just have to do the whole thing , just like that !! Hahaha

Thanks Dale , and thanks for your input.
Swing buy and have a look if you want

The current source is completely viable and perfectly suitable, its just highly inconvenient. Still working on the last part but if I can't get that any better its ok, I don't have to.

Beautiful! I can taste it from here. Is this the vehicle you were slaving away on, doing all the tedious wet sanding? Looks like all the work paid off.

Btw...care to tell us how you did it? (the black to red effect)

  8. Hey Ricky thanks - look here

That fender was just a bigger test panel. It came from the junkyard to the shelf for a year or two until the other day. It got 5 mins with a DA, 3 coats of filler primer , blocked with 220 & 400, wet sanded with 600 and painted. Certainly wasn't prepped well but a little better than a scuff & squirt.

This answered my question in your previous topic. I'd love to see it in person. I'm not a "red" guy, absolutely despise that GM "Black Cherry" color, but that looks alright in my book. On the puter screen I'm certain the true vibe isn't there.

    Like WOW, that's sweet!
I read and thoroughly enjoyed your first thread on this technique. I kept having visions of Grandpa Munster in the cellar, smoke rising from the trap door cracks amid occasional outbursts.
I was wondering if, like, when you "clear the nozzle" as recommended on the can after spraying, you couldn't simply invert the can and rig it in some kinda jig that purges just the propellent?
May take a while but then a puncture here and there could empty the contents of the can rather quickly and safely without a crime scene cleanup.

So...did you end up using the rattle can red for the base?

Are we still talking 22 dozen spray cans, or have you come up with something else?

a guy drove past me in a 57 thunderbird while i was waiting to cross the highway, as it came toward me it looked black, as it went past it changed to a dark candy red, i found out who's car it was and who painted it, i want to paint my 30 coupe that color.

  26. Well George , its like this :
    I need multiples of 6 :)

That base was shot out of gun onto that fender.
That base came out of a quart can.

So far so good right ?

Here's the inconvenient part- I filled said quart can with what I got out of the rattle can.

I have decanted spray bombs into a gun before, its a PIA, cant imagine doing enough to paint a whole car, but hey, A mans gotta do what a mans gotta do, right?:D

  28. My prototype depressurization device works well provided you don't shake the can before the extraction. It does 2 cans at a time.

Now I'm still looking for an identical match , but if I can't find one its ok

  29. Did you find out "how" they painted it ?
Or what color it was ?
