We have a customer that is looking for a place that can make curved side glass off our patterns. Does anyone know of a source? Thanks, T
Other than cutting my own for cars and the house, pictures etc., I'm not a pro at glass by any means but... I've heard of people cutting curved side window glass out of BIG laminated windshields Some of them are even compound curved. Why is he thinking about using your patterns for this though? If he's making curved channels, they may fit and they may not. Or are you doing the whole job?
It is a car we are building, Years ago my boss sent some patterns out to a place that made the glass, he has long since lost the contact info.
I've heard that the place to have it done is Italy, don't know who. It won't be cheap, but sometimes that doesn't matter. A quick Google brought this: http://www.glassprotectionusa.com/ http://www.drgreiche.com/ Cosmo
I would like to know this as well. Every place I have contacted about curving glass won't do short runs and it is always very expensive.
trent... Try Alcapp Auto glass in New York... they might be able to do something for ya, they do a lot of one off kemps and rods Alcapp glass
There is or was a shop in West Chester, PA, that custom made curved glass from patterns. It was listed in a short blurb in Custom Rodder, probably 8-10 years ago. Sorry, no more information than that.
Once when doin a late model pickup chop=There was a place in Illinois -I noticed a few years ago-..........."Elk grove Village" is what comes to me now-[sorry,no memory]- but no number or serious contact info.... They were doing molded TEMPERED windows for late models
In 30 years, I have never been able to get this done! Lots of stories and lots of dead ends. All tho in Australia I could get custom windshields made. I'm sure if you pay enough money it can be done, its all about money.......OLDBEET
Hey, There is a place here in California, either Costa Mesa or Fountain Valley, that does proto-type work for Chrysler corp. and others...... Metalcrafters, I bo leave is the name. I think they do proto type glass- in house. Sorry my bookmarks ain't given up any info.
When curved tempered glass first appeared, you could buy curved laminated glass in many stock curves. Then you would cut the piece to fit. But it was only around for a couple of years, mid 60s? I have listings for it in a couple of my NAGS books. California Glass Benders used to supply curved tempered glass for counter tops, for a partition that went around a 90o corner. I have been stumped for years. A few of the 4 door Chev pickups in the early 90s had curved laminated side glass (rear doors) I have cut down......OLDBEET
T-man, Friends of mine are putting curved side glass in a 50 Merc. They have been putting a lot of effort & research in it - they even made molds to form the glass in, which they sent off to a place in so-Cal (maybe the place listed above?, but I'm not sure) - they recently got the glass back and installed in the car. Try calling Ben Jr. at Roseville Rod & Custom > 916-784-3931
I'll check with some of my Illinois builders and see if they know of this place in Elk Grove Villiage. Mike
I built a model A for a guy from Tulsa or Broken Arrow OK- several years back- that worked at the glass plant [Ford'S] ,that molded the TEMPERED side and rear glasses - he made the glass for his car there....[his was flat though]....anyone know the place? Maybe someone who works there has an"inside" on gettin a few done?
Kenny... im not positive, but i think Ford dumped all of its own glass plants, and Viracon out of owatona mn now makes all of it now... not sure, but mebbe viracon might have a custom glass shop? might not hurt to call em and ask tho Trent
Theres a place here in New Zealand that'll do it. Quoted me $2800 ($1900 USD) for a rear screen for my chopped 54 Chev.
OUCH! did that come with or without a jar of vasilene? i can understand paying a premium for custom formed and cut curved glass, but thats WAY over the top.
That aint't nothin'! I know that when Jerry Kind built the Barris designed Chrysler City Coupe, he had his custom rear/roof glass made to the tune of about $10,000!
Timo Hersti's 50 Cadillac in OSR November2005 had his windows made at Kuttilan Autolasti in Finland.According to the article they apparently have several companies there that can do this ,and make windows for some American builders regularly. They have specs and molds for many 50's&60's cars. He says he made his own molds. Would be interesting to know how thats done.
Thanks for the Finland connection. I will use that if all else fails. I/and my glass guy are working on something stateside. Cleatus, thanks, your connection was helpfull! When I get some info, I will post it up. We are working on two options.
HAHHAHAHAAAHAHHAAHAA! Bob, I didnt know you were a HAMBer! My glass guy Shane called youyesterday. Your guy said you would call Shane back today!
I think Finnish Kuttilan Autolasi has done windows for example Agostinos kustoms. They did curved front and rear glass to my old ´51 Chevy and I was very satisfied their work.
