    Guys,

I bought a '64 Nova SS last weekend.

In an attempt to ID the engine, I have found...

    Date Code- J 20 7

    Block ID- 8921968

    Suffix Code- BA

The car has a turbo 350 so I doubt the engine is original to the car.

From what I can find, the date code tells me 1967 or 1977.

The block ID tells me 230ci or 250ci from 1964 to 1976.

These two facts tell me 1967.

I can find the BA suffix starting in '68 meaning 230ci with a 3speed manual. But in '69 it went to 250ci.

I can't find the BA suffix code earlier than '68.

    Can anyone help?

I used these websites so far..

    Thanks!

the carb number is 7028014 and is a Rochester. If it is original to the engine, the engine would be a '68 or '69 from what I can find.

This still doesn't help determine if it is a 230 or 250 though.

*edit- seems like the 28 in the carb PN means '68. so ***uming this is the stock carb for the engine, it is a 230.

Anyone have some suggestions to give a 100% ID?

the "J" in the date code is Sept. or Oct. depending on whether they (GM) used the "I" that year. Either way, with a casting date that late in the year, you can bet it came out of a 1968 model year.
I also agree with the carb being 1968, but I always thought just the "8" indicated the year, not the "28".
