Some sbc blocks seem to not have the right side of the block not drilled & tapped for the front motor mount. I need to do this, so question is has anyone ever done this, and or are the tapping drilled through to the fuel pump opening or are they shorter on that side. driver side is 1" deep. Thanks!

I had a SBC that was either drilled all the way through on the p***enger side to the fuel pump pushrod area or it was just a thin casting in that area because when I started using the engine oil would leak out of one of the bolt holes. Took forever to find it because the fan would proceed to blow oil everywhere. It was solved by running a short bolt into the hole with some permatex on it. I would simply tap the existing hole, finish it up with a bottoming tap and run the longest bolts that you can get to tighten correctly with some sealer on them

Thank You, I had two blocks one was drilled and one was not. I happened to rebuild the one that was not drilled and now have to drill & tap it. I swear the other one had the holes tapped all the way through, I remember sticking my finger in the fuel pump port & the bottom hole and they were both through. I'm trying to find someone with a bare block to verify. I am having a plate jig for drilling made by my machinest to guide the drilling and will lend it out if someone needs it.

That's how you retain the fuel pump pushrod when installing a new fuel pump. You put a long bolt in there to hold it. After, you put in a short bolt, with sealer, or a copper crush washer to keep the oil in.

I've heard of this for as long as I can remember, but have never actually came across it myself, and I've had my hands on a lot of SBC engines. Now that I've made that statement, I'll probably see them everywhere. Butch/56sedandelivery.

all the early small blocks pre 86 were drilled through to the fuel pump pushrod opening. I have no experience with the 87 and later blocks.

I'm starting my first build using chevy motor. I have two blocks. And both have no holes. One is a 59 block. The other is an early 60's.

Not true, The blocks they have are most likely mid 60's blocks from the period when GM decided that they didn't need to drill the mount holes in the blocks. Guys threw such fits that GM started drilling the holes again after about a two year gap.

It was mostly the Tri-5 Chevy guys who were throwing fits because they had to drill the blocks to put the engines in their cars.
