I am curious, what motor oil does everyone use in their vehicles? 10W30, 10W40, etc. This goes for your rods and dailys.
10-30 in my regular car and truck and 30 in my coupe. Funny thing... if I use 10-30 or 10-40 in the coupe,it burns a quart every 200 miles. If I use 30 ,it doesn't burn any..... and it's a Ford crate motor with 12K on it. It's burned the multi weight ever since it was brand new !!!! ????
I run Shell Rotella 15W40 Diesel oil in my cars during break and daily driving. It has a very high zinc content and is a high quality heavy duty oil with lots of detergents. I change the oil and transmission fluid religiously. Probally why my 95' Plymouth Voyager has 385,000 on its original motor and transmission and zero sludge inside the motor. After that its usually Mobil 1 for the race cars, Quaker State in the daily driver. Its not too expensive and seems to work well. I have tried the others and not noticed and difference over the mobil 1 except price. The new ramp truck...the motor is soooo sludgy inside that I am changing the oil and filter every 1000miles with el cheapo (buck a bottle!) Autogear 15w40 diesel oil to try to desludge it. You put the oil in, fire up the motor, then check the dipstick and its already black again. I have done it twice and after the last oil change the oil didn't look like it already have 10,000miles on it when I checked the dipstick. Only 5000miles this time. A few more and it should be good.
Have used Valvoline for years in all my machines. The few I've pulled down looked fabulous inside. Using Max-Life in the '55 and the '63 now. 10-40 in summer, 10-30 in winter.
if you ask enough people, you'll find that every type of oil available is being used by someone. The brand, weight, type, etc isn't nearly as important as make sure there's still some showing up on the dipstick, and maybe changing it every few thou.
I use 10w30 Quaker State for the 302 in my fairlane. Just got the motor in so I cant really say how well it works, yet. Not to hijack the thread, but what do you guys usually use to flush out a motor thats still good but needs some sludge cleaned out?
I've used Gunk motor flush before, and had old timers tell me that diesel would do just as good, but don't recommend either. Best (safest) thing would just be a couple of oil changes with Hi detergent at frequent intervals.
Throw in a litre of dexron and run the motor for 10 minutes before you change the oil. It loosens up all the crud and you get chunks coming out when you drain it. Since I would rather slowly dissolve the sludge than have a big chunk plug some oil p***enges...I would just change the oil extra frequently and it will eventually clean itself out.
Sounds good, I've heard of the Gunk stuff before but never talked to anyone whose actually used it. I doubt there's anything that big in there but since it hadn't been rebuilt, I'd just feel better about having it cleaned out. Has anyone had any experience with Sea Foam? Someone in my Auto Service cl*** recommended it the other day.
I never change my oil, only the filter, once in a while ,if i remember, 8000,or 9000 miles whatever. When i need to add some i'll just get my jug and go down to the auto supply store that collects used oil . There is ususally some sitting out front on the doorstep early in the morning ,fill my jug and go home. I warm it up in a big pot on the stove and then filter it through some old NSRA or GOODGUYS event tee shirts and its ready for use. (do it when the old lady isnt home) I think all this 3000 mile change interval stuff is just an oil company conspiracy. I dont buy gasoline either but thats a story for another time. _____________________________________________________________ Better things for better living through chemistry
I use Castrol 10-40 in the wifes' nissan, Castrol 20-50 in my 73 f250, and castrol 30w along with STP oil additive when I rebuild a motor. Jonney
10/15w40 Valvoline in the '65 Fury (383) 15w40 Shell Rotella T in the '01 Dodge Ram (360) Daily Driver Soon as I burn up the case of Valvoline I have and fix the oil leaks on the Fury I'll switch it over to the Rotella.
Katfish, you are too much, man !!! If I didn't have to drive 50 miles to the closest auto parts store, I'd take your advice.
Anything BUT Pennzoil, I have had a couple bad experiences with it; like bearings failing at 53'000 miles in a car i bought new and changed the oil in religiously. Two pro mechanics and one race car builder told me they will not use it either. One mechanic said he wouldn't oil a door hindge with it. Some of the new cars have an oil life gauge on them to tell when the oil should be changed, not at a certain milage. My daughters '05 Cobalt went about 6,000 miles before the gauge said it had reachec 20% of oil life, that's when you are supposed to change oil. She does mostly highway driving so it supposed to go longer between changes according to the manual.
i run shell rotella in my toyota truck and land cruisers. and shell 10w40 in the wifes gmc van. and spectro in all my motorcycles. that is some very good stuff!
I used to use only oil that is refined from Dinosaur **** and Millenium-stewed caveman piss as an additive.........As of late I am getting interested in Man made oils and have tried them ......
Yea. Turns out, the dipstick in the 1970 302 isn't accurate in the newer dual sump pan. It was reading overfull even with only about a quart and a half in it. Easier than pulling the motor to fix the pump though! Duh.
Boy, you should have bought the right dipstick! Dipstick! For the record, I use Royal Purple in the hot rod and whatever is on sale in the daily.
