Bought a brand new Moon tach at GoodGuys Saturday, and put it in today. Lights up, looks good, deader than fried chicken!! I'm sure Moon will make it good, I just hate the idea of an "uninstall and reinstall". I'm bummed.
Just imagine putting a dollar value on the amount of time that is wasted in this country replacing brand new parts. I know the thought of how much of my time has been wasted replacing brand new "quality" parts is sickening. That reminds me, the 5 month old fuel sender, and turn signal switch in my truck have both quit working after about 5000 miles. Good stuff.
I know my ground works, cuz my light works. I have power to the power wire from the switched side of the ign. switch. Checked it with my tattle tail. Green wire to the neg side of the coil....
I put a new Moon tach in Faye before I drove to Bonneville figuring I would use it as a speedometer. It looked like @ 2000RPM's I was doing 65MPH. Then I used 2 different GPS's to check the calibration and discovered I could drive between 60 and 70 MPH and the tach didn't move. You get what you pay for.
Its so bizarre with the Moon tach, I had one that worked flawlessly for years and in two different vehicles. Others like yourself get burned immediately.
The Moon tachs have a reputation for being junk. I have one too. Hooked it up and it never did anything. Found out a lot of people that bought the 69 dollar one got a piece of crap.
Wow! I guess it didn't occur to me when I posted this it would turn into a "Moon is junk" thread. That wasn't my intention at all. Whatever happens here is between Moon and me as far as getting this situation resolved. I guess I should have left the brand name out of the equation. I was commenting more about the fact that I was bummed about having to do the install ostensibly twice, and not a comment about the quality of the brand I bought. Mods, sorry if I lit a fire I shouldn't have.....
BTW, I bought that particular unit because I thought it fit the vintage vibe of my 47, not because of the price. The gauges in the dash are Auto-Meter. I guess I should look in their catalog to see if they offer anything that won't look too "street rod".
Well I am glad that you are bummed about your tach. I read the title and was prepared for something ugly, broken crank, fried wiring harness, wreched. But it is just the tach and not something else. Sorry about the tach friend, double check the wiring, common mistakes is switched hot or signal to wrong side of coil. Get your meter out and go to town. Maybe you'll be pleasently surpirsed.
"Well I am glad that you are bummed about your tach. I read the title and was prepared for something ugly, broken crank, fried wiring harness, wreched. But it is just the tach and not something else." Beano, So far, this is where I insert something about wood, the wiring is spot on. The only mistake I have found I made is that when hi-beam indicator is on, I'm on low beams. OOOPS! I have an 80's vintage SunPro tach that has been in several of my hot rods over the years that I'm going to put in. It doesn't have that 60's vibe, but I know it's a good street tach. In the meantime, I'll get an exchange on the aforementioned dead tach and try again.
Mike - that means something entirely different over here.... ;-) It's a fine lifestyle choice if you want to go that way but I'm guessing that you are pissed off?? I've got a bunch of new & unused Moon gauges I bought years ago - here's hoping they work when installed.
I have a China Moon tach that seems to work properly.............going on eight years now. Guess I got lucky.
"Mike - that means something entirely different over here.... ;-)" True story..( you always have to worry when a Texan opens with that...) My late wife and I are visiting London, and we get on the "tube" in Notting Hill. Middle of the day, on a Saturday. If you've ever had the privilege of riding the subway in London, you know that you are packed in there like sardines."Mind the gap!" Anyway, I'm squeezed up against this little 20 something, absolutely Delicious brunette. We are literally rubbing on each other as the train goes along. She looks up at me and says "Yank?" It was a few seconds of reeling thoughts before I realized she knew by my clothes, or calone(sp?) , or something I was an American. We got off the subway and Crissie looks at me and says "That was worth the trip, wasn't it?"
I was too busy trying not to faint! I was in my late 40's. That point where you just can't accept that the ship has sailed.....
