The guys at Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip are working on a nostalgia race event, and I thought I'd help spread the word about it. The date is Saturday April 13th, and it will be the first event of its kind at the historic drag strip. It is still 100% operational with weekly bracket racing and other special events, but this nostalgia race is a great addition to their schedule!

The biggest news is that Don Garlits will be on hand with his Swamp Rat dragster, signing autographs and all that good stuff! The event will be a heads up style, eighth mile race. From what I've heard, there is no purse, so it's a run for fun format. There will be a swap meet and the event starts at 8am EST.

I'm personally hoping that word spreads to some of the old time drag racers in this area, so they can have a reunion of sorts. Brainerd was a major hot spot for drag racing, so there are some big names in this general area. Anyway, just figured I would put this out there!

The track is located right off I-75 and it's almost on the TN/GA state line. The address is 745 Scruggs Road, Ringgold, GA. Call Leonard Lawson for more information, his number is 706-891-9831.

Less than a month away...hoping for a big turnout! I'll be set up, selling my book, "Lost Drag Strips" which has a special chapter on Chattanooga-area tracks. Don Garlits wrote the foreword for the book, so it would be a great opportunity to buy a book and have Big Daddy sign it.

Im sure tech rules are universal, i've run at Brainerd many times. 7.49 and faster require rollbars, driveshaft loops, correct driving jackets for either nitrous or cl*** racing, stick cars need blowproofs, etc...

Yeah, Brainerd goes by IHRA rules, so the normal roll bar requirements and other safety rules are in place. Although I'm sure an event of this nature might cause them to turn the other way if a car doesn't quite meet the standard.

I doubt it, the severe repercussions of a track not following the stringent guidelines they are required to wont let them budge an inch, they have too much too loose, especially after the recent fatality there. Even on the so called "street" days in the past, you conform or go home.

I'll be there, set up somewhere near Don Garlits' rig, selling my "Lost Drag Strips" book, as well as my "Street Sleepers" book. $25 each or two for $40. Look for the blue '64 Corvette and I'll likely be somewhere near by.

Missed Corky's show last week, but not missing this one. Can't wait to get the Hot Rod out for a ride.

Is there actually a car show area, or just drags and swap meet? A few people have asked me, but didn't know the answer.

From what I've heard there will be an area for car show cars. I think they're supposed to just charge spectator admission for car show people, so it would be $10 a head to get in.
