So I'm in SLC this week for work, and cut loose each day round 4:30 p.m. Any recommended spots to hit while I'm here? Auto/history/cool spots would be great, but mainly just want to get a feel for the town while I'm here...even if it's just local eateries/drinkeries If there are any evening show 'n shine get togethers, that would just be awesome. Sorry for the O/T post...
Stop by Salt Flats Speed Shop, I did last year on my way to Bonneville. Dam nice guy and his work in person is better than in pictures. Tim
No big car events that I know of right now, little early in the season for Northern Utah, but here is a list http://www.thanks2frank.com/car show dates 2009.html For Food if you like Mexican you have to go to the Red Iguana http://www.rediguana.com/red2.html And up the canyon a little to Ruth's Dinner http://ruthsdiner.com/ Also I've heard great things about Pat's Barbecue but I haven't been there yet. http://www.patsbbq.com/ You can always give me a call if you need at 801-455-7838 just leave a message I'll call ya back. I have a (very) small shop and a few Restorations around. Clint
Thanks guys...I always forget about Salt Flats Speed Shop. Thanks for the leads Clint, I may be able to look you up on Friday if I get out early enough. I guess my instincts weren't that bad, I went to the Red Iguana (AWESOME carnitas) for lunch when I got here...apparently the original location...
Todd, I'm 300 miles south but a member of the Utah group. I'll post a link to this thread. You can check www.thanks2frank.com for lots of local events, pretty much nightly through the summer. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Note that it's not always easy to get a cup of coffee there; I brought my own. Trying to order after-dinner coffee at a restaurant named after J. Smith or B. Young will get you a shocked look. Ask me how I know (twasn't me!). Nice folks there, at least all the ones I met.
Clint was faster with the reply than me, LOL. You can check out the Utah group here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=20
Wear a bullet proof vest if you have to stand in line at the Red Iguana for any length of time. Tough neighborhood.
Ruth's Diner - great history and cool location. My favorite Mexican food: Cafe Rio inside the historic Rio Grande train station. Market Street Broiler up by the Univ of Utah- great food, seafood etc. Red Rock Brewery if your a drinker.
Well hell, I'd take you out and show you around but I'm in SoCal for work this week. lol... That didn't work out well. I get back Thursday. Give me a call if you want to meet up for lunch. I'll be downtown. I'll PM you my number. Sounds like the typical BS from people that have never been here. It's not like that at all. Seriously, bring your own coffee? LOL...
Thanks for the note Mac...I pm'd you. (I've had no problem with the legal acquisition of coffee, soda, or alcohol)
Kitty Pappas Steak House, 2300 S Hwy 89/91 Bountiful has some amazing steaks, just ignore the hippie waiter (he is my uncle) LOL
This was about 1998, business trip. The off-brand motel didn't have a coffee maker in the room, but I'd brought the fixin's. No problem. The coffee ordering shock happened - I was there - but remember it was a restaurant near the Tabernacle. We had to go down the street to a place called A Legal Brew to get a cup of coffee. It was pretty funny, and the locals we worked with shook their heads and said, yeah there are places like that. We liked everyone, even the waiter who was shocked we would order coffee. That's all I was saying, it's not all like that, but coffee availability is not as universal as it is some other places. At least 15 years back it was that way. The Bad Ass coffee company on State Street is a must stop for me.Also the Harley dealership built out of the old steel mill south of Salt Lake.
Yeah Mac, but they rolled up the sidewalks at 9PM when I was first there 25 years ago. Didn't stop a bunch of HS Seniors from finding a punk show at the Speedway Cafe and a couple cases of beer delivered by a skinhead. Weird trip!@
You need to stop by Braxtons barber shop it is inside a Bonnevillians speed shop. Very cool place and people. like stepping back into 1940 in the barber shop. you can find them at 1185 south 300 west in salt lake. Pats BBQ is the best. I sent you a pm with my number feel free to call with any questions.
Next time I get out there, I need to check out Six States Distributors at 1388 S 300 W on the off chance that they might have some more old photos or info from the General Tire dealership that originally occupied that building in 1950. That is where my Diamond T resided up to 1965.
Thanks for all the input...probably ate better than expected, and just spent a couple hours shooting the bull with Chris @ Salt Flat Speed Shop. Good Times! Got back to SLC airport in time for a rushed, hour long security line...followed by a run to the gate for a flight that got delayed right as I walked up . So Much for making it home before Charlotte goes to bed... Again, thanks for all the replies fellas!
That sounds about like my experiences in the SLC airport. I quit flying Delta through there, because they too often sold me an itenerary they could not fulfill.
