Any recommendations on modern rear axel to install in my 57 Chevy pickup? Not sure what the original ratio is, but it feels like I can pop wheelies in all gears. Would like to be able to drive with decent milage, and run on the highway.
Engine is a 327 mated to th 350.
    As always thanks in advance.

I used a rearend out of a '69 Chevy truck, all I had to do was weld on spring perches.

Any particular reason why it has to be 6 lugs?

My 2005 Chev. Colorado (2wd) has 6 lug axles, It would be narrower than other fullsize Chev trucks. If it needs to be narrower. Normal Norman

54 back, car (not sure how many years back) front hubs etc. will slide rite on your spindles if you want to change everything to 5 lug.

Me too. They came with several different ratios, mine is a 3:08 which I think would work great for what you want.

67-68-69 Chevy 1/2 ton are 1/2 wider WMS have a 1310 u joint that will work with your driveline and just cut the perches off as mentioned and set your new ones. 2-3 degree pinion angle and you get modern bendix style brakes, easy fab ebrake cables and a ton of gear choices. Mine has been working great under my 50'

Get a rear axle from a 1986 K5 chevy blazer. Should be close to the same width also...

Thanks for all of the advice. Would it be easier/better to change out the ring and pinion? If it is better, what ratio would you recommend?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Yes. Find a dealer that sells Yukon gear sets. That was the only one I could find at all for that rearend. Ratio is 3:38 which should work for you. My original was 4:11 - guessing yours was too.
