Is there anyone out there repopping garnishes for 33-34 Ford 5W? I saw some on e-bay last night but they were cast aluminum. I really need steel or 'gl*** as I need to chop them to match my chopped roof. I can weld steel and sling 'gl*** but I can't weld aluminum. I've seen them for sale at swap meets but the prices always seemed WAY out of line, not to mention you'll get that always present 'oh, you really want something that I have and you don't' at***ude that swap meet vendors are so known for. And I'll not urun them before I give one of those guys my money. There's no place for that at***ude. But PLEASE, let's not turn this into a vendor bashing or defending thread. That wasn't my intention, really. Please let me know if there is a source out there for these. Thanks, Vance
I've seen extruded aluminum ones before that looked good, but I have no idea who had them. You've got to know somebody who can weld aluminum.
a guy on ebay had some aluminum garnish moldings for sale.....can't remember if they were 32's or 33/34's.....brandon
Come guys, I said I don't want the aluminum ones. I can't weld aluminum. I'm trying to build my car as much as I can on my own. I knwo people who can weld the aluminum, but that defeats the purpose. I want to do it. Call me selfish of greedy... Thanks Phil1934. I'll try SAR. Vance
have you checked with Wescotts or Gibbons on fibergl*** ones? i believe one of them makes them you may want to check Downs too
FYI for all who are interested: extruded aluminum garnish for most most early ford are being made by Kenny Venberg in Mankato minnesota...phone # 507-387-2650
Ok. Here's what I found out after the above suggestions - Wescott doesn't show them in their catalogue and it's too early for them in OR. SAR actually answered their phone this early and I was told that they don't have them or even plan on making them. Downs said that they are planning on receiving a 34 5W very soon to start producing that body style. At which point they will be needing garnishes for their car and will prolly be offering them in 'gl*** too. So as the nice lady at Downs said, 'in the future, but not yet on the horizon...'. So there's hope for some 'gl*** ones here. I just gotta be patient. I can live with that I guess. I'll just keep looking quietly at swap meets as I wait for Downs to start producing. Thanks guys. Vance
Do a search on the net.. Someone has gibbons molds and stuff but cant remember if they even made a 5 window. Dave
For the quarter windows, I have taken later model moldings and cut them down. I am pretty sure a 37-40 coupe quarter molding would be the correct profile, and maybe the sedan quarters might work too. The the doors, you could use the later parts for the tops but would need to widen them for the bottom portion. And weld on another bead to duplicate a 33-ish look. Would take a lot of fabbing to get the 34 deluxe shape. At all the swaps I pick up every window molding I see for 31 through 40 that's cheap. All with the idea they will be sacrificed into 32 or 33 moldings. The profiles are very similar.
Update - Wescott has nothing. They referred me to Outlaw who has 'gl*** garnishes for the 3W, but they're $180 EACH! My math ****s but even I know that's pushing outragiously high. The swap meet prices were better. Gibbons website is still up and they also had 'gl*** 3W garnishes listed in their PARTS list and they were priced a $60-70 each. So if I can get a hold of someone at the phone number on the Gibbons site, I might be in bidness. Otherwise, it's back to the swap meets, sigh... Again, thanks to all. Vance
I've seen these too. He also makes them for other year Fords. They are nice. Maybe they can make them right to the size you need. I believe he makes them himself, so it may be worth checking.
I'd really prefer to do any modifying on my own. I know I'm being **** about this, but that's what I want. Vance
Look up All Ford Parts / The '34 Store in Campbell, CA. Their catalog lists fibergl*** garnish mouldings for 5 windows in the back. My catalog is pretty old so I don't know if they still carry them. I bought the cast aluminum ones from MegLite on ebay for my 3 window and chopped them. They're dirty castings, but weld up fine with 4043 rod. I used a TIG welder on the first two and the spoolgun on my MIG welder on the last one. Both worked good, the spoolgun was much easier though. I actually attemped scratch building my moldings, but after making one, I decided that there was better things on my car to spend my time. Dave
I recently found out that MAC auto carries 'gl*** garnishes for an almost fair price.$150 for the pair of door garnishes, $150 for the pair of quarter window garnishes and $60 for the rear window garnish. They also carry almost all the other years and model if anyone else is looking. Vance
For what it's worth, a friend of mine has a 32 Chevy and he made up a set of hammer forms out of aluminum and made a set up for his 2 door sedan... you have to do this project during the winter when there is nothing good on TV... where I live, Ford stuff is a lot easier to find than Chevy stuff.... the last 30 Ford coupe I dragged home had missing quarter window garnish moldings...I was very lucky to find one, from a friend of the guy who had sold it to me, for $20..and then got very lucky when another Model A guy sold me one for $15. All along I was kicking myself for p***ing up a pair for $75 a few years earlier..... This stuff is just going to get harder to find as the years go on.... other than taking a casting off an original and making it out of gl***, I myself know of no real easy way to duplicate the originals in steel.
I believe harold ely who owns windsor fabrications out of battle creek michigan repops gl*** mouldings.i recently purchsaed a 5w also but have not checked with them to see if they make them.
