So heres the thing? I can't afford the coker tires without loosing my shirt and rent and all that. And i've been disapointed by porter walls already, what a waist! Anyway so i'm on E-bay and i see Whitewall tire paint. I'm on the fence on if this is a good idea and good direction to go! Does this stuff rubb off? What do you do about lettering and ribbs and stuff like that thats on the tire? Instillation seems self explanitary but not making a mess is another! Also i've heard of guys taking and shaving the black off the tire and getting to the white of the tire Which sounds a little dangerous. Anybody with experience with this would help. THX
The paint doesn't last long, I've tried it. Shaving the black looks pretty good, you need to be careful not to go too deep with the grinder. It's a messy, dirty, smelly and smoky job but the results are solid.
Its hard for some of us to come up with $1000 for a set of tires. I've seen the paint work pretty well on polyglass tires but it doesn't seem to last on the more flexible radials. I've never seen porta-walls look good for very long... they do the best when put on a smooth sided polyglass with adhesive. I have done the best by grinding down white letter tires and there are threads on doing this. But, as robyyo points out, it is a messy/dirty job. The results can be awesome, but you have to be patient and not rush the process to much. I put my car on jack stands, put it in reverse and then start grinding. Use a face mask; take your time. You can have the look and save gallons of money! ...robber
Thanks for the info guys, i think i will try the shaving process. So i will be looking up this process and see how things go. Thanks for all the advice! I will post a reply when i try it
Yeah.....probably 30 years ago, a local tire shop had a portable grinder machine they wheeled out to the car.....jacked up the wheel.....applied the grinder head to the tire.......and before long whitewalls. I called the guy a while back.....he is out of the tire business and sold the grinder. I think you can do it yourself with a hand grinder, but need to be very precise or you get some wavy edges. If you can find a place with one of those grinders.....that would be the most simple way to go.
Here's a video I found on Youtube that shows how to grind your own whitewalls. I'm sure there are more, but this is the first one I found doing a quick search. I've personally never done it, but as others have said it looks like a messy, stinky job, but if you're persistent and patient, it can be done. You might ask around to see if there are any lowrider shops in your area. Most lowrider shops know of somebody who can "buff out" whitewalls. Good luck..........E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkcm3rh60p0&list=FLuLOOOf21TtnZ-P8cQbhhMg
I used whitewall paint from Ebay, probably the same stuff you're talking about. I think it was Callie's Kustoms. But I was really happy with it. Fooled 99% of the people who saw them into thinking they were real whitewalls. You just have to PREP PREP PREP! Make it super clean and using a roller is probably a good idea, but I just brushed it on. That's been 4 years ago, but it's starting to come off on the edges, just a little bit. I'll take a picture of one of the wheels tomorrow for ya. Also, they yellowed real bad, but I never washed them. Probably would have looked a hell of a lot better washed, they looked beautiful for the first few weeks after I did it. Definitely worth it, if you're willing to spend the time and put it on right.
I did something like this on my sons ride, but we used raised letters tires & it really sucked!!!!! looked like sh&t~i'm sure if we would have used wite walls 1st it would have turned out better--the smell & smoke was fun! <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pHWTa2tAYIc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I bought some tires from a friend of mine who used some kind of elastic roof paint, I put em on my truck and I beat the shit out of these tires and thy seem to hold up fine. He is on this board, Jim Gang is his name cant remember his handle... JGang maybe. Chime in Jim
Ask the lowrider guys what shops shave tires for white walls...theres a few around...or go to a shop that specializes in tires an rims for the lowrider scene and im sure they can direct you.....good luck
Theres a vid on youtube somewhere this guy jacked up a back wheel and let it turn at idle and ran a da on it and it came out pretty decent for about 20 minutes of playing around. That's similar to how they did it with a tire grinder years ago. I have an older set of 2" whitewalls I want to see what they would look like someday if I did that.
You may try a search as this subject has been discussed in great depth. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734499&highlight=grinding+white+walls http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=469930&highlight=grind+white+walls
Check my Thread in my signature for painting your whitewall....I was really happy how they turned out, The paint cracks, but still looks good, especially for the price..... ....My truck needs new tires, so I bit the bullet, and I am just under a G into them with tubes and shipping.
Found this guy on utube for grinding tires http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnwevOfIUqA&feature=fvwp&NR=1
