**In like a lion, out like a HAMB** March 2013 Banger Meet

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jiminy, Mar 1, 2013.

  1. Well boys, I've been outta bangers for a couple years, but last night this lil gem followed me home. Painted in the late 50's and parked in 1970. She cranks over but no spark, gonna try to get the A running again! All stock running gear except is has juice brakes

yes it is one of the main reasons it exists but surely we expect folks to do a little bit of reading here every month we post banger advice and tip at the begining of each meet seems like people go to the last post and no further like many others I am thinking of leaving the meetand going else where yes Rutherford buildup is slow but so far have over &) grand in it its not cheap importing parts but the car is still on the road and running we have just done the molesworth / rainbow (NZ back road tracks mainly there to service sheep stations and power pylons in out southern alps) no I cant post pics because I am on dialup and need the money to build cars and service them the RP has been on the road and used for over 40 years now I think that is a good record there are few places in NZ it has not seen. Yes it would be good to see a hill climb banger build or even hear about a miller or hal rebuild but it does not appear here is the banger meet dead just my thoughts

Opps that should read 70 grand which is a lot of money to spend on a banger motor here you can buy quite a nice finished rod for that

  4. Forgive my "stupid" questions...I know I'm new, but I'm soaking this knowledge being past on like a sponge! I aspire to be "synical" like you experienced guys one day! :D

    Keep it coming.....

  5. Russtee, I enjoy just lurking the banger meets for tech and info. I understand some of your being tired of the repetition of Q & A. But if no one had answered my questions in the beginning then my garage would be full of sbc crap instead of bangers. People have a hard time understanding when I tell them I don't do V8s..... I hope you stay and keep us updated on your build and past.

Honestly I am a crazy kid playing with old men's toys. I post from time to time but have little real tech to share. Mainly pictures of my junky jalopies at places I drive em. I appreciate all of your guys contributions to the thread every month!

    Hey Rusty,
I didn't want to post any pictures until it was done, but here are some of my current build.

I decided to join harmonic dampened banger crowd. Mainly just to piss off the curmudgeons over on ford barn. :D:rolleyes:

So I made one out of a SBC damper.

I didn't do a "tech" write up on it because I don't know if it will work in a stock A chassis. So no pictures of the process.

Here is the drawing of the assembly:

Hey guys,... I am about to do the steering on my '28 roadster and the question I have is what type of drag link are you running? I am using the stock steering column with the stock pitman arm, converted the front brakes to F1 and installed one of those superbell steering arms. Do I use the stock drag link with a tie rod added to the steering arm end? What have you guys done? thanks, Shaun

  12. is the pulley off of a generator?
    thanks for the drawing

It's a standard pulley I got at McMaster Carr.

  15. Looks awsome, let us know if it really helps the crank hold up. I know that may take some time but seems other guys say the crank will not hold up for long periods above 3000 with out a balancer. But know one seems to know what size to make them they just say it needs to match the engine harmonics.

  16. I used a 40ish original Ford tierod between spindles from the steering arm. Had to shorten an original model a draglink from steering box to steering arm. I suggest making the draglink adjustable also by threading and putting a collar on it like the tierod has.

I have read a lot about dampers. It seems everybody has an opinion but nobody has any concrete evidence. There have been a few people post on here that they have had success. But I have never heard anybody say that they were worse off because they used one. That is why I have decided to try one.
    We'll see.

  18. Didn't seem to help in my case, got a new Scat crank in the works. Haven't actually pulled it down yet but the flywheel doesn't seem to be connected to the front pulley anymore., New rear end with snubber ready for powder coating. Gotta cut the keyway in the shortened drive shaft.

A harmonic damper, supplied by the late, great Jay Steel of Taylor Engine, has apparently helped my engines. I "blew up" (broken cranks) a couple of race engines before installing one. My current engine has lasted 7 seasons (approx. 130 hours of running). I've run the engine up to 5000+ r.p.m., for extended periods of time, on oval and road courses. I'm a believer!

[IMG] Yeah! There's some photo shop here! (get over it!) But, none below!:p

  21. Thanks! Unfortunately, we rarely run it on the dirt... It does too much damage to the spindly suspension. That photo (the non-photo shopped), is probably the best shot ever made of the car. It was taken by Kevin Gray (a pro photog) a couple of years ago, at Santa Maria. The clay at that track, gets hard as a rock. With all the different stuff running in a night's program, from Hobby Stocks to Sprints, the surface becomes rutty AND washboarded.
The tracks with loose dirt (and mud) like at Hanford, loosen the spokes in the wheels, requiring some expensive tuning. But, it runs very fast on pavement from The Navy base at Coronado, California Speedway, Buttonwillow Raceway and Laguna Seca; to Sears Point in Sonoma.

  22. Wow Very beautiful car, I had a chance to purchase a 1937 HAL racer back in 1989 when I bought my cam grinder from ASH cams, but didn't have $25,000 in my pocket. Too bad it too was a beautiful racer.
I think I have pictures some where yet I will have to dig!

  23. Thanks! Yeah....Find that pic of the old HAL. I think we all would enjoy viewing it. Isn't it amazing the great things we run across, when we don't have the money?:(

Not with out testing it first.

  28. Here is one of my favorite pictures of the roadster at the 2013 Detroit Autorama. I must have given my introductory seminar on Riley Two Port heads and other banger stuff at least 200 times during the weekend. I appreciated the interest in my effort to bring something a bit different to the show.

x2 I do a lot of lurking and also use google site search to do a search for something specific.

For the computer challenged go to google.com and then type in site:jalopyjournal.com xxxx in the search box replace the xxxx with the key word or phrase you are looking for and it will only look for it on the Hamb.

You can put the above on the first page with the links and that may slow down the repetitive questions.

  30. Are the dimension's of dia's actual finish sizes? Is this a press fit for the dampener onto the sleeve?
