Ok, I sent it out about a month and a half ago, and I paid a fairly large chunk of change to get it done. When I finally got it a few days ago I was floored! It came out absolutely perfect! I decided to put it on the truck tonight to see how it looked. Unfortunately I got a hand from someone who didn't have any patients, they grabbed the wrong screw and popped it through the fresh chrome... My question, is there anyone out there who specializes in repairing mishaps like this or can it even be fixed? This is actually the first piece I've had chromed. (I know I'm not off to a good start! ) I can't be the only one who this has happened to... Pic of the damaged area... Just to make this completely clear... This was NOT the chromers fault nor am I claiming it is, they did a phenomenal job and I am seriously upset that this happened...
Is that a dent in the piece, or did the screw poke a hole? I can't tell from the pic. If its a dent, a good metal guy might be able to straighten it, but chrome can be pretty fragile. If it were me, I'd take it back to the chromer and ask his opinion.
is it chrome or stainless trim? Stainless can be fixed no problem. I know you say "chrome" but that is some peoples default term for any bright work..
The real cost of chroming is in the polishing and not the time spent in the tank. If the piece has to have the chrome stripped, dent or hole sorted and then rechromed it will not be as expensive as the first time round.
We have had this happen to a few customers. We will fix it for a small charge. As mentioned below, much of the hard work has already been done. If you used a good shop, which by the quality you mentioned you did, then they should be able to help you out without charging full price again.
The guys that do plating are great at repairing and filling in holes. Just call them and tell them what happened and that it had nothing to do with their work. they will strip that piece and repair it and re-chrome it,,the only down side is it;s gonna cost you time & money but you won't be able to tell there was ever a problem when you get it back. Most of us have experienced the OH SH*T moments..HRP Got the script back from the Chrome Platers and they were beautiful. But within minutes I managed to break one... Within a couple of weeks and more hard earned fun tickets it was as good as new,,HRP
It is chrome not stainless, and the screw poked a hole out through it. Sorry I am not sure how to multi quote for the other user who asked. Thanks to everyone for the advice, I'll be calling the chromer up in the next few days to see what they think. I'm super glad to hear it shouldn't cost as the full price again to get it repaired. I'll tell you, nothing gets you from excited to completely devastated faster than seeing a few hundred bucks go up in smoke... Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Don't want to bust your bubble but the piece I had repaired cost half again what it cost the first time. HRP
Ouch... Well here's to hoping I might get lucky. I'm going to have to bite the bullet either way! Haha Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Yeah, same here,,after a year you'll forget about the pain and the extra hole in your wallet,,,until some other poor soul screws up and reminds you! HRP
When you take it back - ask their advice, tell them how good the job looked and how bummed out you are... They may take pity and cut you a deal ;-)
That might happen,,when I talked to Steve at Advanced Plating he ask me did it happen in shipping and if it did he would repair it free of charge and take it up with UPS on his end. I am a honest man and wouldn't lie about it and told him exactly what had happened. He was nice about it but told me business is business,,he did however pay the shipping. HRP
If I did that to a friends project, I would step up and pay for the repair. He wouldn't have any choice in it.
Can't really tell what the part is but you might just put a chrome or stainless ****on in the hole. Ace hdwe or Lowes have a section with alot of differant sizes.
It's the strip that goes in the middle of the windshield. As I was looking at it today I may just run it the way it is... I took the truck out onto the road for a quick spin and god I want to just get it together already. I don't really want to be dropping more cash and time into this one piece right now. So it looks like my OCD might be taking a backseat to practicality for now... Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
B-O-B>>>Can't really tell what the part is but you might just put a chrome or stainless ****on in the hole. Ace hdwe or Lowes have a section with alot of differant sizes.>>> Best suggestion yet as long as it's not intended as a show car! Or get a nice plated fender bolt. It'll be hardly noticeable except to the most ****ly-fixated. Consider it a christening mark. Jack E/NJ
No, my dad was actually the one who did it. He apologized and I could tell he felt real bad about it. I was bummed at first, I got over it. I am not holding him to it, nor have I even told him he should pay to have it re-done. Some things are more important than money...
wxp>>>Windshield chrome, just stick a fake bug over the hole>>> If that's all it is, get a roll of aluminum flue tape from Depot or Lowes. Cut out a nice circle and affix to hole. Or smooth hole depression over with a bit of caulk before taping. It'll be really hard to detect. Glad you got over being bummed. Jack E/NJ
i like the fake bug idea after all when its done and your driving the hell out of it its gonna get alot of little dings and stuff mine mostly come from the dragstrip waiting in line to do my burnout behind the next guy doing a burnout
Screw a badge, comp***, St. Christopher, light, army man, gauge or some trinket down there and then you can pretend the hole was intended.
