I put a 1955 chevy three speed and bell housing on a 1975 350. When I went to mount the starter from the '75 it wont fit into the bell housing. What do I need to do? Whole different starter or different nose piece? I know this is kind of a rookie question but that is where I am right now.

  5. Most towns have a starter/alternator shop,,they should have the parts you need. HRP

  6. Stick shift cast iron snout is smaller than the aluminum automatic trans starter snout to get you the clearance you need.

Sounds like you are using a block mounted starter with a bellhousing that was designed to have the starter bolt to it; make sense? What most guys do, and I HATE this happening, is to cut, remove, knock off the innermost bolt hole tab on the bellhousing starter mount. That usually gives the needed clearance. IF you're using a 168 tooth, 14 inch diameter flywheel, they I'd use a bellhousing mount starter; if you have the smaller 153 tooth flywheel, then you're going to be stuck with using a block mounted starter, and time to get out the O/A cutting torch, BFH, or hacksaw, and cut the bolt hole tab off the bellhousing (another one sacrificed). Is a mini starter out of the question? They don't use a nose cone.

BINGO! This is exactly what I am using on my 56' Bel-Air 3 speed manual, and 327 sbc.
