    Hi Fellow HAMBers,

I recently bought a 1956 Buick Special. Am planning to put in a 401 from 1965 Buick with st400. Also planning to put in '61 or '62 center section in the original rear-end housing. Have visited Centerville Auto Repair website for technical info. What a great site! Also got in touch with HotRodstoHell owner for info on ordering his conversion kit from enclosed driveline to open driveline. Both sites & people extremely helpful.

Am seeking info regarding possible clearance issues on factory steering box. Also, trying to sort out needs for st400 mounting.

    Thanks All,
    buford56

    Hello Buford56

I am fitting a 425 into a 56 Buick and the factory power steer box was hard against the stock 425 exhaust manifold.

A 58 or 59 364 manifold is a different shape, (2nd picture) if you can find one, and will rise up over the steering box.

I installed a later model delphi power steer box with a slightly narower profile and I now have a comfortable 1/4" - 3/8" clearance. Not a good indication in photo below. Other options include offsetting the engine mounts to the p***enger side or milling some off the box or exhaust manifolds.

I am happy to help if I can, and I'm sure others here will do so as well.

    Ross
