I dont know if the penetrol would be a good idea ...if you're going to paint it down the road..who knows what type of reaction it may have with any top layers of paint it may have,,if it is an oil based product No-No dont do it....

After it gets wet, you might find rusty blotches from the steel wool that embeds in the primer. I wouldn't do this.

grey scotchbrite and comit cleanser or ajax get car and scotchbrite wet and scrub in straightline strokes, this will cut an even dullness to the primer. wash good by hand after doing each panel.

Thanks guys for the sugestions, I want to paint the car in the future but would like to do a few more things to the body before I do. This car is a custom which is made from a more door so i am sick of body work and just want to drive it for awhile before i do more body work and paint. I think I will try a few of your suggestions under a skirt to see the results then use the one I like the best. Wont do the wd40 i do know better than to do this. thanks for the help

I think you probably just have to accept that it's primer and it's always going to look like primer until it's painted. Theres really nothing you can do to spruce up primer with any kind of reliable result.

I've heard that before. And less likely to leave any residue that will cause grief later.

I painted my 32 coupe with John Deere Blitz Black and scuffed it up with brown scotchbrite pad. Looks pretty good .cost about $40 to do it.

I make primer look better by blocking it, sealing it, painting it, clearing it, wet sanding it and polishing it. Works every time!

Spray it with clear, flat, semi or gloss. Now its durable and the look you want.

Since this old thread has been brought back to life, I have long been a fan of primer hence the moniker hotrodprimer, for years I have used primer and tried all types of tricks to keep it looking fresh and clean.

I finally ran across Kirker s.g. black that seemed to give me the look I desired, another thing that works well is Rustoleum red primer but rhe secret is to mix some Rustoleum brown enamel with it to keep it from fading and streaking.

  20. 13 years ago i primed with tinted urethane primer, hit with 600 and Buffed. looks like original enamel or early lacquer paint. Has held up well over time. 44D689DA-6FD8-428D-B36D-3CB536150F75.jpeg

One of the nicest Suburban surf vehicles in all of So Cal...

    Hello,

Some hot rod trucks, vans, wagons and sedans look good with primer. Some look awful. To all old school guys/girls, primer is the step just before the final color is applied. It has taken on a look of unfinished hot rods to the local custom car rolling down the street as a “statement.”

So, if your custom is waiting for the final spray color, then just let it go and don’t worry about it. But, if the black primer is going to stay as part of the statement, then look at the GMC Suburban with the slightly shiny primer paint that looks finished, but yet gives off a bold look.

Again, if your custom is ok for a basic primer look, you are already there. Or get out the polishing wheel with a little buffing that is up to your skill. Slightly shiny or the regular black primer surface, your custom is on the right track, individual ideas and very cool looking... YRMV

The hardtop look is rather an excellent idea with only a few that have made the challenge...
