Hey guys and gals I'm trying to re-do my door panels on a poor (wo)man's budget! lol I have bought some foam board and have some vinyl material and am thinking about redoing them...but need a lil help from you guys. Does anyone have a link to a video or some tips on a 'do it yourself' project? should i add some backing inside the doors to make it a lil more plush. On my back panels inside my car, i used foam board, white vinyl material and some super adhesive glue.. just needing some help! thanks, Stephanee
use the old ones as a template if you have them. Use a good brand spray glue and just be creative. You shouldn't have any trouble. The top trim and door handles hold the panel mostly in place and a couple screws will hold the bottom.
Here are a couple good links http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115914 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127492
The 3M adhesive spray works the best. Not sure the foam board is the best material and the glue you use just might eat it.
Thank you everyone for your advice @FireEngine- i've been using the some spray glue that i got at Hobby Lobby and it worked fine on the foam board for the back panels i did. i wanted to buy some templates off www.chevsofthe40s.com , but i'm not sure which to buy since i only need the 2 front ones. Would the ones that say "for year '53" work just as good as the '54 ? i'm not sure if there is much of a difference from those 2 years....so i didnt purchase any. @Triox=i still have the original ones on there. We are goin to LSR in Austin-leaving Thursday ..earrrrrly in the morning..so i'm crunchin' time in trying to get everything finished. another question? on the metal pieces on the doors....can those be re-placed and re-used and put on to the next panels i use?
Metal pieces...??? You mean trim...??? Yes, on the rear of the panel are "fold-over" clips attached to the "metal pieces"...simply unfold them and remove from the original panels. You'll need to poke some holes in the new panel to push them thru... '53 and '54 door panels are the same -literally... IF you are using "foam board"...the white stuff with foam in between the white, you'll find they won't last very long if they get wet...spend some money and go get some black plastic from an upholstery supply...about $30 for a 4' X 8' sheet, cuts with a knife...glues great...no sense buying a template from 'Chevs of the '40's'...money wasted...just trace the edge of the door all the way around onto paper (or foam board), lay it on the new plastic and trim to fit...it won't ever warp from getting wet...!!! I've always had good luck using eucaboard. They sell it at Home Depot or lowes. About 10.00 bucks for a 4'x8' sheet. It's kinda like the same stuff that's stapled to the back of furniture and cheaper entertainment centers. Some people call it hardboard too.
yeah, what ****s is that the only place that i would be able to go to get get that is over an hour and a half away. car show is next week...guess we shall see .... @ Matt.. that's what i was looking for but didnt find any around here. We only have ACE hardware and Star Lumber here...so i dont know what i'll do.. i may just have to use cardboard for now...and then go back later and make them look better after the show... thanks "40StudDude" for your help! i'm a bad procrastinator...just wish i had saw that link that "Tin Can" had posted on here the other day...man, i'd have all this stuff going...only got a few days left..so it's crunch time
Just get 1/8 luan ply, also sold as a door skins at the lumber yard.cut to fit sand the edges.. Get auveco 808 clips, drill holes in panel and door if needed [1/4 bit] apprx 6'' apart . Good luck . Jack
