Anybody know if it is OK to land a small plane on the salt during speedweek? Last time I was there (90's) there were a couple of planes, but I don't know if it is still allowed? Thanks
I'm sure that there is some sort of permit required. I've seen the helos out there but are usually ***ociated with filming some high dollar project running. Wendover airport is not very far away from the salt. If you have some friends going, they could pick you up from there.
I know there was at least one plane last year, but the rules below I recently received state otherwise for 2013. Might want to make a call to be sure. http://library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1111846962285-19/SpeedWeek_Stipulaitons.pdf
Bob, thanks for the link. Who would I call? BLM? State of Utah? Looks like it is not permitted anyway.....
Yes, the new BLM stipulations prohibit planes. And if you read those it bans camping at the Bend in all the BLM areas where folks usually camp. State land to the West is open however. From reading that I also expect to see checkpoints on the way off the salt this year. Come on budget cuts!
After looking at the regs.It looks like you need to have a OHV license for any gas powered pit bike or race car or truck to be in compliance with the law as stated. ........................ Jack
Landing on a bright day is difficult. Depth perception is not good on that surface. I have see unintended contact with the ground more than once there.
On thing I do know. The road to the salt is posted at 45 MPH, it is the longest road in Utah at that speed with the anticipation you are feeling. DW
Mac, I need to touch base with you about Speedweek. Shoot me your number again. Plus, there is somme diner in Immigration Canyon? I saw on TV and want to check it out.
Huh,new rules kinda changes things...Me and a friend are building a bike for Bonneville this year...We won't be using an ATV to tow the bike ....
Ruth's Diner is in Emigration Canyon. The not-so-legal immigrant diner is a rolling taco stand downtown near Sears.QUOTE=Tman;8768003]Mac, I need to touch base with you about Speedweek. Man I wouldn't land my spam can there..that salt is bad news on exposed alum. I was there 2years ago and a guy landed his C170 with wheel pants (fibergl***) and his tailwheel dug in quite abit. Just to say you did tho is worth something. Great airport in Wendover with alot of Enola gay history.
The way it reads in the March BNI Newsletter, the no camping rules are limited to the salt, not Bend in the Road.
Any licensed / experienced pilot should know how to find the answer to your question, FAA-wise. Or... claim your engine was sputtering or something and take'r in! Pay the fine later. Gary
I was asking on behalf of a friend who would like to attend for the first time. I am not a pilot. The question has been answered already....thanks to all!
I wasn't trying to rattle any cages, but if you want the official answer about restricted flying areas you would consult current flight pubs or contact the FAA / agents, right? Sorry for any ruffled feathers. Gary
Here is what Miriam Macmillan posted on landracing.com. She is in the loop (BNI Chairman) Guys, If you have questions about this, please ask me. If necessary I can get clarification from the BLM before we go to SpeedWeek. We put the stipulations out early, to give us all time to get our heads wrapped around it. You can still have a can of beer on the salt flats (I'm guessing you are all over 21 - chronologically speaking anyway.) Just no gl***. Please don't drink and drive. And yes - the BLM do believe the bend in the road is within their area of control. The SRMA is the Bonneville Salt Flats and the BNI/SCTA is under contract to behave in a certain manner within that area - basically from lands end on. However, the bend in the road is BLM land. When you p*** the gas station, you go p*** a BLM sign. From there on, you are on public lands, managed by the BLM. They tried to make one set of rules to apply for both to make things ... easier? They are charging BNI for rangers to patrol the bend in the road as well as the salt. Yes camping is still ok and no, they can't close it down or charge fees to use it (I asked that question too). But they can regulate its use - hence the rangers and rules. The BLM were generally happy with the way the racing was conducted on the salt. They thought the setup, layout and operation was safe. Their main focus on the flats themselves is the yahoos who go out the back and do donuts (hence the speed limit). Everywhere the rest of us go, our posted signs take precedence. If you have further questions, please feel free to email me. miriammacmillan@me.com Miriam Macmillan BNI Chairman
