I used the original radiator with a hopped up sbc when i first did my swap. i never had an issue. i eventually installed an aluminum radiator just because i wanted a nicer looking engine compartment.

Short water pump, and you should't have to move the radiator. The only concern would be corrosion/deposits in the stock radiator, so you might want to have it gone through. BUT, at the price to do that, you can get an off-shore radiator like already mentioned. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Why doesn't the mechanical fan fit? Mine fit in my '51 with LOTS of spare room.

If you mount the engine as far back as it will go, with the "ribs" removed from the firewall, and use a short water pump, you can use a mechanical fan.

I ran a new radiator for a 6cyl all last summer with no issues. Now it is not very hot here in the NW but never had an issue. My sbc is basically stock with mechanical fan. I am not sure it would handle a hopped up motor. I do plan to upgrade to a 4 core in the future.

My engine came from a suburban so I guess its not a short water pump. I'll look into it. Thanks

Short water pumps are cheap and plentiful. I plan to use a short pump and a solid fixed fan in my '50. To fit the sbc I had to cut the ribs, just the lower parts to push engine to rear and it clears the radiator and bracket perfect.

As for cooling with the sbc the stock rad, no advise for you yet.
