I thought model a front axle widths were if using fenders use a 46" axle if not use 48" but now I see speedway makes a 47". I am soon going to order a 4" drop axle for my coupe and need to know which width to use. (Its fender less) Is it just personal preference? What are people running. p.s. I searched for the answer to this stupid question but did'nt come up with much of anything prolly cause its so well known:/
I remember seeing a thread about it somewhere, it's not a big deal to ask a question, that's what it's here for.
it depends on what you will be using for wheels/tires sizes and the wheel offset also , the brakes can make a difference.....discs usually are wider than old ford brakes
Be sure that the axle is FORGED, and not cast. But, yeah, it's pretty much personal preferences. Personally, I prefer using a factory Ford axle that's been dropped, which you can still get today. 296 V8 on here deals in them: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=614475
47 is fine. MOst popular Superbell 4" are 46-3/4". With 40 brakes & early Ford rims fit 26-34 prefect. My 26T had a 46" Magnum with 40 brakes & 15" chevy rims, I added adaptors to bring it out to look right.
I guess 46" does look better on a HighBoy. But it's preferance. SideNote: S10 rearends are Very Narrow & a 46" would "Match" better.
There's good advice in preceding posts on this thread ... read them carefully. There's not really much difference in 46", 47" or 48" axles insofar as the aesthetics are concerned. Any one of them will work under either a fenderless or a full-fendered hot rod. But before setting on one, make a decision as to what brakes you're gonna use, and devote some time to figuring out how "deep" they're gonna be -- hydraulics? Discs? Buick drums? All those will a varying effect on overall width. And that -- in turn -- has an effect on how much backspace you're gonna need on whatever wheel you choose. It's like playing chess, Dude. You need to think a few moves in advance....
I used a 46" axle on my avatar with 16" wires and 5:50 tires and it was too narrow. The tires rubbed on the inside of the fenders at full turn, the 30 coupe I'm building now has a 48" tube axle and clears everywhere.
Please send us the "Money" shot. We're talking width here. Where the tire sits in relation to the fender egde and/or "pocket"
I used a 46" 4 inch drop axle on my 1930 Ford sedan with a rear from a 1986 Z-28. 15x4 front wheels with 165-15 tires. Rear wheels are reversed 15x8 with 255-15 tires. I love the width of the axles and the stance. CTJ
I ordered a 47" forged speedway axle. they are on backorder though I am using a 74 camaro 10 bolt rear end, 70's gm speedway disk brake kit and 14" 6" aluminum slots up front(if they clear the caliper) keeping my fingers crossed. they should clear as they fit on my 70 nova that uses the same caliper.
SOrry, personally, Fendered, 46" is too narrow. Again, Soorry, I like that fendered cool alot, but, liked it better Un-Chopped.
