I am putting together a 60 buick convertible and have reached a point of exploring ac options. I picked up the Gen 2 Vintage air mock up unit and it seems too wide and long to fit under the dash. I picked up another mock up unit from Vintage and it seems like I could make it fit, but I'd have to cut out some of the firewall and put a cover over it. Has anyone had any luck putting in after market air in a 60 buick that might be able to give me some guidance or ideas. Pics are helpful as well. Thanks.
ive never owned a old car with air but i did have a buddy who had a 60 impala that we drove in tn heat at its worse and it kept us cool with a big under dash he had takin from a old ford.i have a few of those underdash units also.as soon as i find someone who knows them better than i do im gonna stick one in one of my cars. im gettin old and this heat kills me....
Have you considered dual a/c? I'm going to run a Gen IV up front and a trunk mount unit in my Brougham. You could do an under dash unit and a trunk mount, that should be enough.
Depends on what you are looking for, if you just want cold air then the under the dash is your answer, but if looks are important to you then the vintage is the only way to go. I put an under the dash on my 55 olds, big mistake, shows up like **** on a white chicken. looks like an after taught, something from JC Whitney If you can find a vintage unit, every thing can be hidden, blow the cold air through your ash trays, nice and clean. And besides the old units blow a lot colder.
Tried the Vintage Gen IV. It doesn't fit between the dash and the firewall... The best one that fits from Vintage is the Gen II Compac. I'm told that it might not do a good job of cooling a big cabin. Perhaps some of the Vintage guys could chime in on the Compac
