thought id start a little build thread on my latest project. posted before that i picked this up from a good friend of mine, got a decent deal on it, looked more solid before i tore into it but its a solid base and a good start so im happy with it. here it is nestled away in its new home for awhile, gutted the interior to get a good look at the floor pans, dash is pretty nice and complete wiring is a total disaster, i dont know how this thing ever went down the road without bursting into flames... the trunk need monr work along with the b pillars. it will be a slow moving project but i will keep this updated as much as i can. drive train is a sbc , with the original three on the tree and rear end.
thanks guys, it will be slow going but it'll get there. first bridge i have to cross is the brakes, i want to keep the three on the tree and swap out the front drums for disc and go with a dual master for safety reasons. what can i do to get a dual non power brake master mounted on the original mount ?? speedway list a pedal and master but it says for automatics only. does anyone make a master or a adapter to mount to the original pedal ***embly ? searched but havent found what i was looking for. any help would be appreciated.
How ironic is that!?!^^^^^ I'm having brake issues also, and started a thread. I'm already subscribed to your thread, so I'll lurk along.
Once upon a time someone offered a master cylinder mount that bolted to the original pedal bracket and converted the 3 bolt mount to a 2 bolt mount for modern cylinders. It was about an inch think of aluminum if I remember right.
^^That mount is still available from several sources, but they all say it moves the M/C over to make room for automatic transmissions. All ty166 and I want to do is replace the original M/C with a dual without moving anything. Right ty166?
yeppers, thats what im hoping for. i might have to talk to a buddy who is a machinist and see what he says... i just dont want to try to reinvent the wheel if something is already available.
so today with the help of a good friend we tore off the front sheet metal. im curious as to what engine might be in this car, its a small block chevy , cast into the left rear of the block is 3756519 , and stamped into the right front pad on the motor is F724D , has a old carter carb and the left side manifold has the dump at the front of the manifold under number one plug. if anybody has any ideas any help identifying this motor would be great. thanks
Tricked us by waiting till post #9 to tell us it had a chevy in it. Can't help ID it but I am sure someone will. Pretty clean car, good luck with the build.
Motor is a 1958-62 283ci. Stock is between 170hp and 315hp on the high end. Cant identify the Vin of the block though. I used the website nastyz28.com. Pull off the heads and see if they are power pack heads with .202 That would be nice!!
nice, thanks 48FM , the rumors were the motor suposedly came outta a early vette, but i can only go by what the guy i bought it from was told by the guy he bought it from told him. tryin to get this old girl fired up, just aint having much luck.
I didn't know they made so many Vette motors, everyone with a small block has a vette eng. block. Nice car, my fav.
you gonna keep me in the dark like that ???? what did you do for push rod ?? just make on to fit ?? what master did you use ?? disc / drum ??
thanks, its alittle rough right now, gimme time and itll be a nice ride. like i told the guy i got it from, just cause someone says its from such and such a car doesnt mean it is. to me it dont make a bit of diffrence, just kinda curious.
my 46- used the 3 speed so had a clutch in the way as well- bought a ch***ic engineering system for 35-40- what they said would work- nothing works as designed- I did not do work so can't be much help to you- I know the mechanic made spacers and modified push rod- had to cut larger access panel in floor- works just fine-
thats a start, i will have to look into that setup and see whats all involved to get it to work... pics ??
The little brake master cylinder adaptor that they are talking about is offered by lots of different companies. I just looked in Speedway, and I know I have seen them in there before, but with the way they are laying out their catalogs today I can't find it. All it is is a piece of about 5/8" thick aluminum that is shaped a little like a triangle with the early Ford M/C/ bolt pattern drilled into it with counter sunk bolt holes. Then, two holes are drilled and tapped for the late M/Cs bolt pattern. You bolt it to the stock pedal ***emby with three counter sunk socket head bolts, run two studs into the threaded holes and bolt the late M/C/ on... Simple. If you're sticking with drum/drum brakes I would look hard at a '74 Maverick drum/drum M/C. They are cheap as dirt and the residual check valves are built into the M/C. Same would go for disc/drum, just ask for a disc/drum M/C.
Look at ECI, Engineered Components Inc., for the three hole to two hole master cylinder adapter. I bought one for my '40 ford some years back, and used a 1976 Mustang disc drum M/C and it worked great, and did not move the M/C to the side.
the only mount adapter i could find after hours of searching speedway was to convert to power brakes, nothing to convert the ford to a dual master. bjinxs for the win, i checked ECI and found exactly what i was looking for, all i want to dp is mount a dual master to the original pedal and not interfer with my clutch linkage. here is the link, http://www.ecihotrodbrakes.com/ford_master_cylinder_systems.html about half way down the page for $99.95
Thanks, guys! My 47 is going up on stands soon for a complete brake job, and I'm looking hard at discs for the front. Either way, it's going to get a dual M/C.
im thinking a disc conversion also but this car will mostly be just around the neighborhood and friday night cruiser, so i may just go with dual master and four wheel drum. keepin this one low budget, last on got way outta control when it came to keeping it in the budget. once its done and road worth i can always go back and up grade to disc. any one have a suggestion on a dual master i can use that will work with four wheel drum for the time being ??
