Hey guys,is there anything i need to know about having some parts shipped from Canada into the USA,im looking for the fastest, safest, and of course the cheapest way...There doors and a grille...thanks for the help...
Where in Canada? If the shipper is near the border it's far simpler to drive them over and ship from the US. If that's not an option, then Greyhound is cheapest for large bulky stuff, within reason. As long as it doesn't have a VIN # there's no issues shipping across the border, antique car parts are duty-free under NAFTA.
Having bought some large parts from Canada, and having the seller ship them from the US, he said that he wished he wouldn't have boxed the stuff up before crossing the border because they destroyed the packaging looking through everything and he had to redo it all afterwards. Living in a border town, we cross back and forth with old parts all the time. Carter is right, never pack them until they have cleared customs. These days a sealed package is a real bad thing. But they are duty free, you may have to pay sales tax but never much. Greyhound is definitely the cheapest for shipping doors and stuff.Unless you can find someone headed to your area. That is usually the best way to guarantee they get there damage free.
Not true. As a Canadian traveling to the USA to ship parts, or anything else... it is a commercial endeavor as far as customs is concerned. Get your wallet out.
Grwyhound doesn't ship across the US/Canada border, so they told me. Across Canada or across the US OK. Had fenders shipped from California to North Dakota and drove down to the Greyhound depot to pick them up. Any parts I have shipped to the US have been via the post office (cheapest) or FedEx, but nothing that large. Canuck
I agree. If you take them over yourself, be prepared to fill out a form and leave $10.75US on the table. This is only if you're not doing it as a business. They call it a inport fee. I think it's just a nuisance. And don't tape it up, leave the parts accessible.
......and if shipping from Canada into US, I would be VERY careful if you are considering using UPS, as those raping, pillaging BASTARDS charge OUTRAGEOUS brokerage fees. At least they do when the stuff is coming from US into Canada. Anyways, do your homework to avoid being treated like that new guy in Cell Block D!!
Looked thru all of the above. Some valid, some not so valid. First rule. Ask your. Border (ie point of entry) Customs office. Occasional items, they are generally pretty forgiving. If ya'll are in business, make it clear! You want these guys on your side!! I have a drop box on the US side for several reasons, primarily JUST shipping across the border is Very expensive! FedEx, UPS, their Broker fees are scary, both ways. Expect your goods to be opened or Xrayed. Carrying opened boxes or exposed goods in plain sight is the way to go. In my case, my post box happily helps us package and ship and they also act as drops for the majors. Short story, I totally get where Customs is coming from and I do not want them as adversaries. We have found that once we establish a relationship with these people, (Border Personel) they're pretty cool, and some have been following our builds.... (I cross a lot) Finally, Declare! It ain't worth it to get busted for smuggling a used Frammitz for the pennies you may save, because those folks got Looonng memories
