Anyone have pics of a fully functional 49 Mercury trunk inside and on the trunk? If so post them much appreciated thanks.
Hmmmm I'm on a quick Easter Break and visiting Aust Nations on Gold Coast, when I get home Tues I will take a pic of mine and post
The radgirl is back! I would have been glad to help out but all my stuff is 1951 vintage. It is similar but not quite the same. The 49s used the rotating fork & pin latch on the p***enger doors and the trunk but for 50 & 51 they changed the p***enger doors to the star wheel type latch and the trunks each year had a little bit different trigger opening mechanism but they all still had a version of the rotating fork & pin type latch. The latch pin plates on the lower trunk rear latch panel were the same for 50 & 51 but a little different for the 49. There is enough similarity that they can be interchanged between year models depending on using the correct trigger & latch mechanism for the year type you are converting to. Or a person could swap it out for any numer of other electric soleniod or cable operated latch set ups that have been used on customs over the years.
I have a 49 and a 50 merc as well as another 49 but both cars have custom setups and my next project has nothing, somebody here will post a pic soon is my guess.
That one looks to be modified with an electric solenoid release. The latch and the pin plate look about the same as the 50/51
Anybody have trouble getting the 49 merc dash off? Do all the knobs come off or are there some that dont?
the pics for the trunk helped i will have to do a little modifying but it will work i just need a new striker plate for the inside of the trunk.
Nobody has answered this question yet, that would be because the different knobs all come of differently and for us one finger typers that will take a while, so I would say lay on your back on the floor looking up and figure it out..
A lot of those strikers go missing cause the tin on the trunk floor around the striker rusts and they go missing.I made a striker that goes on the trunk lid and borrowed a seat latch mechanism that holds the rear seat up in a modern car with a fold down rear seat, the you can use a solenoid and an emergency release cable through the trunk floor in case your battery which might be in the trunk goes dead.
Mercury Land was selling a scratch made latch pin plate that will work. The originals are getting scarce.
I don't know very much about all the knobs in the dash but is the lights knobs a push/pull or is it a turn knob originally? Somebody might have an answer for that since I have never had anything electrical working in there since i have had it. I think the lights knob is loose and wont tighten anymore i thought it unscrewed but i guess not. So I might have to tack weld it in the back.
The light switch should have a ****on on the backside of it. Push the putting and the knob and shaft will come out. It pulls out to turn on, left to right is the dimmer
