I need help from a transmission expert. The turbo 350 went bad in my coupe, I had a spare trans in storage so to keep from tying up our shop hoist I had the spare rebuilt, we put it in, has a noise like a power steering pump thats low on fluid in low and high, second gear has no noise. Trans works good but has the noise. We pull it back out so the "expert" can fix it, says this time he put all new bearings and gears in it. Put it back in and sounds the same. Any ideas what's wrong?
it depends when the trans makes noise. Just in lower 2 gears or ih direct drive as well. Thw only thing that can make noise in an automatic is the planetary gear set, or the front pump, or a fin broken loose in the torque convertor. Your noise almost sounds like a peoblem with the torque convertor. Unfortunately, you can't tear a convertor apart and look inside. Good lucj
the torque converter is new, the sound is only in low and high, second gear is quiet. as you speed up the sound increases.
in high gear, the gear sets are locked togather, its in high/direct drive, theres no gears churning. hast to be the pump or converter, strange it has no wine in second, humm
I think I would look at ALL of the needle thrust bearings very hard. Also check the planet gears, they have thrust washers and needle bearings inside each gear. 6bt
Does it make noise Standing Still in neutral? In drive? In reverse? If it doesn't it should rule out the front pump and the converter. If it makes noise in gear but not in neutral it should rule out the pump but not the converter. Jack up the rear and run in reverse, may rule out the rear planetary or not? Help me out here - when is the sprag engauged? Clickity-click! Dave.
PS: Does it have a stock or a high stall converter? Either way, when you pull the trans back out, I would change the converter anyway just in case. Trash in the converter?
What do you mean you can't tear a torque converter apart????????? I just had mine cut apart to put new bushings and bearings. There is a ****** shop in Davie, Fl that cuts them apart. It sounds like a thrust washer is missing in the planetary, won't make noise in high gear.
no noise standing still in gear, no noise in park, no noise in neutral, no whine in reverse, whine only in 1st gear and 3rd gear moving down the road, no noise in second, brand new torque converter.
Ok, my vote will go to an internal oil leak either in the case, the servo or in the valve body. I call the noise as high pressure airiated oil coming from that leak when the front clutch ***embly is engaged - first and third. Let's take it apart and see. Dave.
It would indicate to me that your problem could be your intermediate roller clutch. I don't know what it sounds like but this clutch (Roller) would only be applied in second and could cause noise in first and third, I would look in the area of 555K in the illustration. You should be able to eliminate a pump noise using a pressure gauge if your pressure rise is not erratic I doubt if there is a pump problem.
The only thing I can think of that is in common between 1st and 3rd gear, that could make noise is there is a needle thrust bearing between the pump stator and the direct drum in later model th350s (1977-1979). In second gear the direct drum is held stationary by the intermediate roller clutch so the bearing would not be spinning. It probably will make noise in reverse also if the speed was high enough. Bill
