Hello All, I have a few questions about hot wiring my car. I have a 51' Hudson Commodore 4 door which weights 5,000 pounds so its not easy to move around. But I have just put in a rebuilt 262 staying original with the 6 volt positive ground set up. The problem that I am having is that I will connect the battery, get power to the solenoid, and voltage regulator. But to the push button starter I get nothing, also to the ignition switch. To bypass this issue for the time being I was going to wire a toggle switch to the ignition coil from the negative of the battery to the negative on the coil. The way to control the starter I am lost on how to hook it up. I have a push button starter, and I think I should hook it up from the negative on the battery to the button then to the starting solenoid. Thanks, Paul
Negative battery post to starting solenoid is right. To make it easier you can go right from the big wire on the solenoid (the battery wire) to the little wire (button wire). If the key is not on you can run a wire from the battery - to the coil. A wire with 2 alligator clips is handy for this. You need both starter and coil hooked up for the car to start.
I hot wired my car today. Starter works, and I'm getting power to the coil. Now the distributor decides not to make spark. So tomorrow I'm going to Napa and buying a new cap and rotor, checking the gap, and replacing the points
