All Borg Warner t5's had a metal ID tag bolted to the transmission with one of the bolts that held the tailshaft housing to the gearcase. The tag will have a number: 1352-xxx. Find the number on the ID tag on your t5 and look it up here: http://www.britishv8.org/articles/borg-warner-t5-id-tags.htm
There may still be a decal on the top cover, indicating the number, as well. Good info: http://www.flatheadv8.org/ernie/ernie-t5.htm
Look at the T-5 section at www.inliners.org Great information. You'd be surprised at just how many variants there are. Normbc9
Put it in first, spin the crank or the input shaft one turn and see how many times the output shaft turns.
It is out of the car and in pieces on the bench.1st gear has 32 teeth and cluster for first has 14 teeth.
Gotta know how many teeth are on the input shaft gear and the front gear on the cluster also to figure the first gear ratio but easiest way is to get the number off the tag
I just did the math for you! It is a 4.0272:1 first gear [ probably S10 ] so it should be 1st – 4.03 2nd – 2.37 3rd – 1.49 4th – 1.00 5th – 0.86
I bought a Camaro T-5 before knowing how many variations there are. I wanted a 3:1 1st gear ratio, and didn't realize that that ratio only comes from the factory behind an 8 cyl. 6 cyl engines come with a 4:1 ratio. Finally tired of the granny low and swapped in an MY6--great improvement.
Thanks for the help found out it is turbo 4 cylinder t-5 out of a thunderbird. It is a world class trans.
Those have a unique input shaft - longer and spindly-er than any others. Difficult to adapt to few things but the 2.3. Take a picture of the tailshaft and post it if you would - I've always been told, but never seen, that the shifter is slightly forward of the Mustang position...of course, heard this was for the V6 Super Coupe, but I'd assume it would hold true for the Turbo Coupe as well...
