Hey guys, im putting a iron duke 4 cylinder in a 1929 Ford Model A, and i was wondering what you think the best trans to go with would be?

We want it to be manual and don't care about performance, as long as its reliable. We were looking at the T5 Borg Warner, but not sure if that's right.

WTH, go with a 6 speed. You'll get all you can out of the duke that way.

Plenty of t-5's available.. Works very well with that motor. What gear?

  5. I would go with an early V8 Ford transmission (1932-39 with the '39 having the best syncros). This would let me keep the stock rear end (to which I would add hydraulic brakes). I would use the brackets designed to install a V8 trans in a stock Model A for the wishbone support and clutch and brake pedals. I have a 181 Mercruiser Marine in my '32 but it was easier since the pedals and wishbone mount to the frame in '32. I ***ume your iron duke came out of a rear wheel drive car and ***ume (correct me if I am wrong, my knowledge is mostly around the Chevy II and Mercruiser marine engines) that a standard speed shop adapter designed to adapt a V8 Chevy to an early Ford transmission will work for your application.

Most of the iron Dukes came with 4 speeds.. I bet you could get one cheap at the junkyards and I think it would be better suited for that particular 4 cyl....

T5 5speed is all you need. You will love the overdrive. The 6sp. gets a bit bulky to fit in early cars IMHO.

yeah i figured the T5 was a good choice, one more question, what would be a good rear end choice? were on a budget here so that's something we have to consider. Ford 9 inch maybe?

  9. I should probably keep my mouth shut since this is way to new for me but I think I have heard that people use the Bronco to get the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern (which I ***ume you have on the front?).
