Ok, I plan on driving this car daily, and hopefully make some longer trips in it to some of the different events held. I was wondering if someone could list me the items i'll need to address in order to swap a new motor /trans into my car. I was considering a late 80's mustang 302 w/ an automatic overdrive ******, or a chevy 350 /with a th350 or overdrive transmission. Would the ford 302 be an easier swap? The car is currently bone stock, it has the original flathead v8 with the manual 3 on the tree with OD. I'm sure I probably left out some info you need to know, so if you ask i'll try and answer it ASAP. Thanks
Hot Rod & Custom Supply has bolt in motor mounts for a 302/auto trans swap for your shoebox. I'm not aware of the differences in 302s from year to year though. They should also have something for a 350. You can get a 5% discount if you order online this month. Just type 'SEPTEMBER' in the coupon field. For the 302 swap, you will need a rear sump oil pan and have to alter the trans tunnel. I'm hoping to get this swap done soon also. Just waiting for the mounts to arrive. Hope this helps a bit.
Whatever engine/trans you choose, they aren't difficult swaps. Use a Bronco pan & pickup for the 302 & a Nova pan & pickup for the SBC. You may have some minor trans tunnel clearence issues if you have a 49 or 50 but 51's have a larger tunnel for the fordomatic ******s that were introduced that year. Also, ditch the stock rear & get a Mavrick rear (almost a bolt in) or a Ranger pickup rear (move the mounting pads) with a ratio in the low 3's or hi 2's if you plan to do anthing beyond around town driving. Also search the board here for more info on this subject. Billy
