I understand that in order to use a V-8 trans behind a Model B engine, I need to use an adapter. What is different? Is the adapter used as a spacer, or, for bolt hole location? What is the best way to ID a Model B trans? Is there something I can measure? Numbers? I searched on here for a specific answer, but found none. Info on links I've found don't go into the Model B. I'd need to buy a Model B trans, and would like to be able to ID one easily.
Model B transmissions look just like a V8 from the front case bearing back. In front of that, they are quite a bit longer and have a place for the starter Bendix to kick into- whereas V-'s that was on the side of the oil pan
Her is a photo where the starter bendix kicks in: http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/btransmissioncases.htm Charlie Stephens
I have a stock Model B and a '32 with a Mercruiser Marine so I visit both here and fordbarn.com. You might have better luck with your posts on ford barn.com. Charlie Stephens
I'm running a Model B motor and transmission in one of my Model A's. The Model B transmission has 39 Lincoln-Zephr gears in it. The other Model A has a B motor in it and V8 gears in the B transmission
So what case do you have? It sounded like you have a stock 32 B Model, is that correct? If you have a Model B motor and want to use a V8 transmission, there is an adapter that can be purchased. What you'll have to do is cut off the flywheel housing portion of the oil pan and use the Model A flywheel housing. With this setup, you'll be able to bolt the adapter on and then bolt the V8 transmission to the engine.
A Model B gearbox would have used the same ge****t as any 32-34 V8 gearbox, thus, you can have any "V8" gears just by using the stock B case. If you want the 36 and later gears (including the LZ gears) you must use at least the 36-39 shift tower with the appropriate shift forks. There are certain mods needed for installing certain gears, but nothing difficult. If you need a B case check around...not too hard to find.
Right now, I just want to find a "B" trans to put in the vehicle. (Behind the stock banger). If I have to approach with a "plan B" then I have the needed info. Thanks everyone!
Berts Model A in Denver had a rebuilt B Banger box there the other week - give them a call. I have no idea what price they were asking http://www.modelastore.com/
Using an adapter is by far the easiest way to go. If you use a B case, you need to fabricate a rear mount, clutch and brake mounts and linkage and an e-brake mount. The adapter kit is all bolt-in and does all the above. Go to www.clingsaftermarket.com for info.
I have a model B banger transmission which I want to mate with my model A banger. Does anyone make an adApter kit for this supplication ? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/btransmissioncases.htm covers all on Model B stuff. There are several other pages there you want to see on all the pieces.
