So I found the 1949 Chevy that my grandfather used to have it is a 3800 series with a 216 in it. It runs but not well the carb is gummed up on it pretty bad and I was just going to buy another one but I can't seem to find one. It is a carter w-1 684s if anyone has any info on where I can find one I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Here in Michigan, I'd probably talk to Northwestern Auto Supply. But I wouldn't know who might be nearer to you. If you do a little research, I know you can rebuild that carb. Plenty of info on the web...probably step by step tutorials...maybe even on youtube. Buy a rebuild kit. Get a couple cans of carb cleaner and a parts brush. Take pictures as you disassemble to help with reassembly. Take your time, keep everything in order, don't lose a single piece. Careful of hidden springs and check balls beneath some components. New gaskets, float, accelerator pump, pay attention to the float level adjustments (both high and low) etc. You'll have a good carb, and be proud you did it yourself. And you'll save quite a pile of $. Give it a try. If the throttle shaft and related bushings are excessively worn, it might be worth it to buy a replacement carb. I'd do an online search using terms like "rebuilt vintage carburetors", etc...with your state name. Maybe put an ad in the wanted section here. Good luck.
Btw...if you decide to rebuild the carb, and can't find tutorials on the net, watch some youtube rebuilds of similar carbs to get familiar with the process. The rebuild kit should have an exploded view of the carb and all the parts. That'll help too. A Rochester 2G carb will also work on that engine. Be sure you get the right mounting bolt pattern...as in, distance between the mounting bolts.
I rebuilt the carb on my 216 from a rebuild kit from NAPA. That was my first carb rebuild and it worked out great.
I think, because of the original, and because of the cheap replacement, do so and save the original for YOUR grandkid. Wayne.
That carburetor is about as complicated as a an adjustable wrench. Just rebuild it, cleaning it in the process. Keep your history alive.
www.carburetion.com in Washington. They have them fully rebuilt usually and guarantee the work. Normbc9
Check out the carb shop http://thecarburetorshop.com/ http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/CarterChevroletW1.htm Here is the service procedure of a Carter W-1 http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carter_W1_service.pdf hope this helps
Very simple to do a rebuild on the W-1 carbs. I've done it twice (cause my dumb ass didn't get a new gas tank the first time and clogged it up.) and I'm not a carb guy at all. In fact, I hate working on carbs...but the W-1 are easy to do and fun to learn on. Get a can of Berryman's Chem-Dip, a workbench and some time and you'll have that thing working like new.
Thank you everyone for your input and sorry I haven't gotten back to this sooner have been very busy. I think I will rebuild it I found a couple videos and they look very simple. Thank you again Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
