alright i was jsut driving my 1954 ford customline and coming to a stop sign when i was nearing to a stop i heard a pop in the car, and my speedometer and odometer quit working. I'm kinda of irritated because its a 58k miles original car, and I'd like to keep track of the miles. i just had the speedo cable lubed and cleaned, andput a little bit of graphite in the head of the cluster. and it WAS working great. what does it mean when you hear a sudden pop and your speedo and odometer quit? i pulled the end of the cable out of the head of the cluster and i couldn't tell if it broke, it looks okay.
Do you have the end of the cable sticking out from the speedometer head connection? If it's ok,,put it in a cordless drill and spin it after you remove the end from the transmission and see if it turns. HRP
The end of the cable broke off so no it's probably in the speedometer head still I was coasting to a stop when it broke what do I do just put the drill onto the transmission where the cable would go in?
No.........the suggestion was to attach the drill to the CABLE at the transmission end and see if it turns and runs the speedo.....but you have already determined that the cable is broke at the speedo....so no need to do the drill thing. Apparently, your speedo input shaft has seized (aka "locked up"). Need to pull the speedo and see if you can free it up or sent it to a speedo repair shop. Ray
If just the end at the speedo came off you may be able to put it back on. The universal cables used to come with the ends unattached. The mechanic would cut the cable to length then crimp the end on. If the end came off and you lost very little cable, you may try recrimping the end.
If the end snapped off and is in the speedometer head your probably going to have to remove the speedo,,if it's locked up a replacement is your best bet. Th astro dome is not to hard to remove. HRP
Before you take the broken end out, check to see if the speedo turns freely by spinning the broken end/cable.
