I looked at a '64 and '65 LeSabre they both had nailheads and 2 speed auto ******s. Then I look at a 4dr '64 Wildcat that also had a 2 speed ******. I been reading the info on the HAMB that I need to look for 64-66 Full size body cars and they will have the ****** that is compared to the TH400. But all the shifters said L and D . The wildcat had a 4bbl carb. Did I miss read something???
Any 64 to 66 nailhead would have a ST400 3 speed auto behind it. Are you sure the LeSabres had nailheads and not the smaller V8 of that period.
the early buick switch pitch 400 shifted from "L" to "D" It used second gear as a kick down for p***ing gear.
You will only see L and D on the shift indicator!! When you take off in D you are starting in first, the car will shift into second, then third just like any other turbo 400. You can downshift manually into L at any time and depending on the car's speed at the time, it will drop into second or first.
