When did Aluminum slot (or mag slots) hit the hot rod scene? I like them but i'm not sure what "period" they fit in... guess would be late 60's. dont seem to be as reproed as 5 spokes which says something about popularity... but i like 'em.... i'm wierd though.
American Racing is making them again. I saw the ad in August 05 R&C anbd thought, why would someone buy those when there like fleas at the swap meets. Then I remembered, "Oh yeah. Not everyone finds swap meets and junk yards charming. Heck, they might get dirty. Why do that when UPS will bring them right to thier door." The price? 15" start at $599.00 !! Zoinks!!
1964 or before,I think Gas Ronda's 64' thunderbolt fairlane had them on the front, when he won the us nationals in 64'.I like them too, have you tried to find a set of front skinny slots lately? They are to the freakin moon price wise.
most of the early s/s and f/x slots were the chrome steel stuff (as in howards ) or some ran the mag halibrands....i would have to guess 67-ish .....ansen i would guess was one of the first to make em .....radir had a oval window wheel ...but i would guess it was a 2 piece deal ......nothing aluminum slot -ish mentioned in the 65 hot rod i was looking at.....ha i finally quit looking for a cheap pair of skinny slots....and sold the rears.....brandon
My weak memory bank says Ansen Sprints about 1964. I can tell you where I first saw them, but the date is a little fuzzy.
mid 60's but I always think of them as a 70's era wheel. On a side note 6 years ago you could not goto a swap meet with out tripping over dozens of them. now they have started to become popular again any you find are exspensive especialy ansens
I just thumbed thru a couple mid 60s drag magazines, lotsa FX cars, no aluminum slots that I could identify for sure. Halibrands were common, and the low buck cars had chrome steel slots (which I remember seeing lots of in the JC W catalog in the early 70s) I have only one of these cast aluminum wheels, looks to me like an early cheap imitation of the Halibrand wheel. notice the raised area around the slots.
I lived in southern Ontario and went to Detroit to buy Ansen Sprints in 1969. They were fairly new around '68 or so.
I know where I can get a set of Ansen wheels. 2 are wide and 2 are skinny. I'm told that they will fit a Ford. What would be a good price to pay? I also have a set for my 56 Chevy.
Which nut (or both, hell I don't need for anything anymore) will I have to give to get a pair of skinny slots? I know someone who has a pair but he's reluctant to let them go...the bastid.
