If you've ever shipped an engine, whole or pieces, you probably have had a tough time with the freight companies. I've talked to many of them and usually they have no clue what an engine is or why you are not going to pay $3,000 to ship a $500 engine core across country.

I've used these guys enginesdirectfreight.com two times now and they do a fantastic job. They understand what an engine is, how to ship it, and are pro's at handling all the details. They deal with all the top name freight carriers and so far I have yet to see their prices be anything but the best. All I did is give them my credit card and few basic details and they handle all the rest.

I don't have any connection to them..but just wanted to p*** along a tip that might help someone who needs to get an engine shipped.

Do they have pretty good pricing?

Yes. Their pricing was better than the prices I was given directly from the same freight company. How much? I don't recall exactly but let's say it was probably $300 versus $450.

I don't find many companies in today's world worth mentioning but so far they get an A+ on every count.

I have also used them to ship engines, crates with heavy doors, and transmissions, all with success. Their prices are very reasonable as well. I have used them probably 40 times in the last several years.

I agree with all of the above. Very good company with good customer service also. Very reasonable costs, and easy process.

I bolt them to a 45 dollar engine cradle, bolt that to a good skid, build a 1/2 " thick ply-wood box around it and done.
Any freight company will take it.
Anyware from $200.00 to $600.00 depending on distance.

I realize this sounds strange, but sometimes heavy items can be shipped cheapest by air, if you live in the vicinity of a major airport.. I have used a company called Forward Air several times.. they ship terminal to terminal (like Greyhound) except by air.

A Hamber from Australia bought two of my engines. BenD here on the Hamb took care of getting them to the west coast. I just had them secured to wooden pallets with heavy fencing wire. Ben pulled up, I used the skidsteer to load 'em, along with some other parts for the buyer, and off he went.

I don't know what it cost the buyer to get them to California, but I've heard Ben's prices are very reasonable. Nice guy too.

I've recently used Enginesdirectfreight also known as Engineshipping.com. to ship a boxed engine on a pallet (467lbs) from Toledo Ohio to Compton California. Picked up March 18, delivered March 26. Price was $225. Service was outstanding. Very impressed and highly recommended. Would certainly use again.

  14. G'day all, A couple of years ago I bought a complete Mark 5 454 and turbo 400 trans from a motorhome off Evilbay. The fellow I bought it from strapped it nicely to a pallet and dropped it off at Magnum shipping. They carged me $200 to ship the pallet here but I had to pick it up at the depot.

A couple of days later my wife calls me at work and said Magnum would like to drop off the engine. Huh? I'm supposed to pick it up. No, it was loaded on a local truck with a tommy lift and they put it in the garage for me. No extra charge, just nice people.

Took the 454 apart that night and it had a head gasket out and telescoped a piston. Nothing else the matter. Of course the transmission wasn't a 400 but was a 475 with straight cut gears. Had that built with a removealbe bell and a transbrake for the 59.

I have also worked with Mark from Engines Direct. Shipped two engines to CA and they were great to work with. As a side note for regional shipping I now use Fastenal. They do not require a boxed pallet to cover the engine and have very good pricing with full insurance included. I shipped a 780 lb engine from here in VT to Indiana for $125. Got there in four days. I also shipped a complete 283 with 3x2's on a pallet to TN for $150. I did choose to cover the engine with a cloth wrap and shrink wrap to avoid prying eyes! Conversly, I just shipped a 37 Lasalle ****** from MD to me in VT and it cost $125. Seems there minimum is 125 FWIW.
To get a quote from them just go to their site and look under services for LTL shipping (3rd party) and fill out the form and hit send! You do not need to be a customer to use the system.
