Anybody know which rear this is? I'm guessing '55-'64 pontiac because it has drop out center section and 5 on 5 lug pattern. I would also think '55-'57 because it is under a early 50's GM and doesn't look to be modified much if at all. Can anybody narrow it down from there? year span would be fine. Not too picky. Just can't get to it real well to look for numbers at the moment. Thanks for any help.

I though the Pontiacs had three ribs on the side.

best I could do with where and how it sits. I'm still thinking '55-'57 pontiac. I think three ribs came later....?

Maybe someone can do better confirmation, but could it be the early style 57-58 Pontiac/Old that used the 29 spline axles? The later 59-64 31 spline axles the third memebr looks different, but has similarities to what you have shown.

additional information. The driveshaft to yoke connection is not of the u-bolt/stirrup type. The flange on the pinion yoke is flat. (ie. it doesn';t use the cupped bearing U-joint). It uses the early style, which is why I still think '55-'57 poncho.

    not a pontiac 55-64 u-joint is the same 55-79.
but u-joint looks like a cadillac 1949 is it coil sprin or leaf?

    leaf.

could it be possible that this is the stock '50 pontiac rearend?

I ***umed that pontiac did the switch to open drive shaft in '55 like chevy, but now I have been looking around and have seen that maybe they were ahead of chevy and had open driveshaft as early as '49? It would make sense being that it is under a '50 pontiac if that is the case....

You might be right about being a 56-earlier Pontiac rear. If Rocky see this, or PM him, he has some experience with the 56-earlier style rear and can probably confirm it.

on the Olds Pontiacs, the center section got much larger dia in 57, bigger everything like gasket, ring gear etc.

on the earlier ones(49 through-56), different years of the Olds I saw, have different mounting hardware welded on, depending on the exact year, so if it does not look like stuff was ground off, it might be stock....but i sure don't know about Pontiacs that early.

I believe Pontiac was open drive line back in the 30's. I don't know how far back it goes as I haven't owned any that old. I had a 48 that was open and I know all the 49 on up are open as well.
